PURPOSE
The Associate Director is a member of the Islander Housing leadership team. This position assists in establishing and implementing goals and strategies for residence life. The Associate Director provides leadership and direction for the residential communities through supervision of assigned professional live-in staff members. The Associate Director is responsible for providing opportunities for residential student development and success through programming and student support initiatives. This position is responsible for scheduling the on-call schedule and being able to respond to emergency/crisis situations. The Associate Director will develop budget for the department and will assist with other emergency situations such as hurricane/tropic storm preparedness and evacuations.
DESCRIPTION
Functional Area 1: Administrative
Percent Effort: 50%
Provides leadership and direction for the residence life area at Miramar and Momentum Village apartments.
Supervises and trains in collaboration with Housing leadership live-in professional Residence Life Coordinators.
Lead assessment efforts for Islander Housing in close communication with the AVP for Student Affairs focusing on the effectiveness of all components of theIslander Housing residential experience utilizing CAS and ACUHO-I standards surveys and coordinate assessment efforts with those of key university partners within SEAS Student Success Admissions and other specific assessment priorities such as those associated with accreditation.
Serves as the Housing liaison with the Office of Student Conduct and Advocacy.
Works with the departments business administrator on operational unit budgets and provides input for departmental budgets.
Maintains area calendar to coordinate residence life with the official University calendar.
Manages Resident Assistant recruitment and selection processes as well as meets University state and federal guidelines/laws.
Serves on Dean of Students I-Care team and other departmental/campus committees as assigned.
Monitor budget and resources for the residential life department ensuring that all expenses are within approved limits.
Participate in strategic planning and decision-making processes for the institution as a member of the Housing leadership team.
Enforce the terms and conditions of the Student Housing Contract Resident Handbook and all state/federal laws; investigate resolve and/or refer for adjudication.
Attend staff meetings and other meetings as scheduled
Act as the review person for selection/hiring concerns
Functional Area 2: Support
Percent Effort: 30%
Participates in planning directing and coordinating operational or procedural matters to meet department goals and objectives.
Provide leadership and support during both move-in and move-out operations ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for residents.
Assist the Housing Operations team during peak periods offering additional support as needed to maintain service excellence.
Acts as a Mandatory Reporter (Campus Security Authority) as required by the Clery Act.
Serve as the on-call supervisor with the Associate Director of Housing for professional staff when needed.
Works with University Police Department Counseling Center and other campus departments on immediate response to incidents in the residence halls.
Respond to student and parent concerns; refer difficult cases to appropriate personnel
Demonstrate care compassion and follow through with student mental health and roommate related concerns
Functional Area 3: Program Management
Percent Effort: 20%
Responsible for assessment activities for the Department and for producing monthly semester/term and annual reports and statistics.
Monitors compliance with all unit department University and government standards policies and procedures.
Create opportunities for student leadership recognition and collaborate with other departments to assist in student leadership development in collaboration with the Housing leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in applicable field.
Eight (8) years of related experience.
Additional education may be used as a substitute for the minimum education/experience requirement:
Masters degree in higher education and six (6) years of experience
Doctoral degree in higher education and four (4) years of experience
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Strong verbal and written communication and written skills.
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite word processing presentation and spreadsheet applications.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
Previous experience in a university housing or student affairs role in a higher education institution.
Be able to work late evening hours handle crisis that may arise.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Eight (8) or more years related experience in residence life housing or a university environment working with a student-oriented and service-centered attitude.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
This is a 12-month live-in position. The Associate Director of Residence Life is required to live in an apartment on campus. Apartments are furnished and include utilities and wireless internet. Partner and pet policies are available upon request.
The Associate Director of Residence Life serves on the university incident command team assisting the Director of Housing. During an evacuation the Associate Director or Residence Life is required to evacuate to an off-site location with Housing residents.
The Associate Director of Residence Life will respond to emergency/crisis situations at both campuses.
