Position Overview:
The Director of Operations provides strategic and operational leadership across IslandWoods programs departments and campus. This role combines project management business process improvement facilities oversight and organizational administration to ensure systems and resources effectively support our mission. The Director also leads safety compliance and risk management efforts ensuring strong governance and operational resilience while driving efficiency collaboration and long-term sustainability.

Reports To: Chief Operations Officer

Classification: Full-Time Salary/Exempt

Pay Range: $100000.00 to $118000.00

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday

Paid Time off annual benefit:

IslandWood offers 3 weeks paid vacation floating holidays 10 annual paid holidays (paid if applicable during contract period) and 80 hours of paid annual sick based on date of hire and length of service.


Responsibilities:

Operations Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership across programs departments and locations to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations through direct management of the Executive & Operations Assistant ensuring administrative needs are met and streamlining opportunities are implemented.
  • Facilitate collaboration across departments to balance organizational priorities and resolve operational challenges.
  • Develop and manage budgets for responsibility areas including long-range planning in coordination with finance.

Project & Process Improvement

  • Lead cross-functional and departmental projects from initiation through completion as identified by the COO.
  • Actively identify opportunities to improve business processes; collaborate with stakeholders to design solutions and manage implementation to completion.
  • Partner with the IT Director to leverage technology investments implement knowledge management strategies and ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Apply change management practices to ensure adoption and sustainability of new systems and processes.

Facilities & Site Management

  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Senior Manager of Facilities to ensure the 255-acre campus is well maintained and supported by long-term capital planning.
  • Ensure appropriate and balanced utilization of the site across programs and events to support mission delivery resolving competing needs when they arise.
  • Lead strategic capital planning efforts aligned with financial planning and reserve studies.

Risk Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure organizational safety standards are implemented and maintained across all operations and facilities.
  • Oversee risk management functions including insurance contracts liability claims and incident response.
  • Manage compliance with operating licenses alcohol service policies and other regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with insurance representatives and legal counsel to manage renewals liability issues and claims.
  • Partner with Events and Hospitality teams to ensure compliance with laws and policies governing site access housing and property tax exemption.
  • Develop and maintain organizational risk management and compliance policies to support strong governance.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant fields.
  • 810 years of progressive management experience with responsibility for operations projects and cross-departmental leadership.
  • Experience with risk management compliance and liability issues including policy development and incident response.
  • Experience in facilities oversight and long-range capital project planning (preferred).
  • Experience in nonprofit organizations (preferred).

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong proficiency in project management and change management methodologies with a proven track record of leading initiatives from design through adoption.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify assess and implement business process improvements including leveraging technology in collaboration with IT.
  • High technical proficiency including Microsoft Suite (with SharePoint) and openness to emerging tools (e.g. AI) that enhance efficiency and knowledge management.
  • Excellent documentation organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong problem-prevention and problem-solving abilities with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Proven ability to successfully lead coach and develop teams.
  • Skilled at building collaborative relationships across departments and representing diverse perspectives in operational decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt communication for different stakeholders.
