Description / Position Overview

About the Job:This position oversees the DNA Unit and assists in the management and operations of the Colorado Springs Metro Crime Laboratory as a member of the management team. Works with the Quality Assurance Manager and participates on the laboratory quality team to establish monitor review and recommend updates to all aspects of quality related to the sections being supervised.

Please note that the hiring salary range is firm and the salary upon hire will not be more than $100750 annually.

As a Crime Lab Supervisor you will:

  • Completes administrative functions such as case assignment and review provides input on annual budget preparation may provide input on grants and grant reporting assists in expenditure approval and purchase of supplies.
  • Administers routine personnel matters including instructing assisting resolving problems advising employees of the Colorado Springs Metro Crime Lab (MCL) policies and procedures reviewing performance and recommending personnel actions.
  • Coordinates operations with the Crime Lab Manager to ensure services provided meet agency and customer needs and comply with administrative and professional procedures and protocols.
  • Assists in development of goals and objectives for the Colorado Springs MCL supporting and guiding efforts of laboratory staff to achieve these monitors the achievement process and provides relevant information used to compose periodic reports on these efforts.
  • Supports the Quality Assurance Manager to develop and approve written directives for the operation of the Colorado Springs MCL as well as ensures active participation within the quality management system within the unit they are responsible.
  • Remains current and informed on organizational issues and directs the development of any new protocols and practices to address these issues while communicating with and providing guidance to laboratory staff on these issues.
  • Participates in the quality management system by assisting the Quality Assurance Manager in monitoring the accreditation standards training manuals unit standard operating procedures corrective action plans performance monitoring activities conducting periodic audits and updating policies.
  • Assists in the development of improved procedures with consideration given to innovative procedures applicable accreditation standards and new technology.
  • Monitors equipment system applications chemical computer and other physical inventory within the MCL.
  • May carry limited case load in discipline they are responsible for which may include chemistry firearms forensic biology latent prints crime scene investigation and/or other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as necessary; administration of the laboratory information management system coordinates activities with internal and external stakeholders both public and private including other City departments labs courts District Attorneys Office other law enforcement agencies media and scientific associations to ensure successful operation of the Metro Crime Lab.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to lead train and supervise laboratory staff including performance evaluations coaching and assigning work.
  • Extensive knowledge of the workflow of a forensic crime lab
  • Considerable knowledge of criminal law criminal court proceedings and rules of evidence
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement and monitor quality assurance procedures and ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues law enforcement agencies attorneys and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including the ability to convey complex scientific information to diverse audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related area of study.
    • Preferable related areas of study are in forensic disciplines to include DNA Chemistry latent prints firearms and/or crime scene investigation.
  • Three years of full-time professional experience in a related field including one year of administrator and/or supervisory experience.
    • Preferable professional experience is experience in a crime lab with ISO 17025 or ASCLD Lab accreditation.
Education and Experience Equivalency:One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience within a Forensic Crime Laboratory including in a law enforcement setting.

  • Additional education in leadership management or business administration either by college course work or professional training courses.

  • Professional experience is experience in a crime lab with ISO 17025 or ASCLD Lab accreditation.

  • extensive experience in the DNA field including but not limited to serology interpretations technical and administrative reviews STRMix and experience as a DNA Technical Lead.
