Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Using specialized skills in assessment planning and treatment the Rehabilitation Clinical Specialist provides therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction restore function and/or reverse the progression of pathology in order to enhance an individuals ability to execute tasks. They serve as the subject matter expert and as a consultant to peers and other medical center staff in evaluating and treating patients within their specialty area of Therapy.

Essential Job Functions

  • Evaluates patients with specialty diagnoses thoroughly identifying impairments functional limitations and disabilities. May also treat patients outside of the area of specialty if volume dictates.
  • Reviews physician referral patients condition and medical history to determine therapy treatment needs. Performs and documents patient evaluation re-evaluation and develops treatment and discharge plans.
  • Plans and administers medically prescribed therapy treatments to patients.
  • Reviews progress and modifies treatment goals and plan of care as appropriate while maintaining accurate and concise records on treatment provided and patients progress
  • Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home.
  • Responsible for overall management of patient cases including communication and coordination of care with treatment team.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and promotes the specialty program.
  • Precepts in the direction and evaluation of clinical experience / internship of students from participating colleges or universities.
  • Orients instructs and directs the work activities of assistants aides students and volunteers.

Licensing/Certification

Active license in state of practice for one of the following areas: Occupational Therapy Physical Therapy Speech Language Pathology (required)

Must maintain one or more of the following certifications in a specific treatment method/technique that requires ongoing educational requirements and renewals (one-time courses/exams will not qualify) (required):

  • Board Certified Clinical Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS-Certified Specialist)
  • Advanced Certification from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)
  • Board Certified Specialist (BCS) recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) Certification
  • Pelvic Rehabilitation Practitioner Certification (PRPC)
  • Certified Neuro Specialist (CNS)
  • Certified Hand Therapist (CHT)
  • Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist (CSRS)
  • Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS)
  • Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS)
  • Manual Therapy Certification (MTC)
  • Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) - MAPS
  • Fellow of American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists - AAOMPT
  • Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) - Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy Academy of Lymphatic Studies (ACOLS) or Klose Training
  • Certified Oncology Rehabilitation Specialist - Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute (PORi)
  • Certified Neonatal Therapist (CNT) - Neonatal Therapy Certification Board
  • AIB Certified - American Institute of Balance
  • Postural Restoration Certified (PRC) - Postural Restoration Institute

BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire required within 30 days for BSMH required at hire for RSFH)

Work Experience

Five years of experience in Occupational Therapy Physical Therapy or Speech Language Pathology (required)

Two years of direct experience in area of specialty (required)

XDemonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

XDemonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
