Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision ofthe director ofKaUlu Hoi:

  • Assist with the writing editing and publication of Kawaihuelanis monthly online newspaper.
  • Work with the director to proof read and edit submissions prior to publication.
  • Upload completed articles each month to the Ka Ulu Hoi website and social media accounts and update these pages as necessary.
  • Acquire pictures for each article published as needed.
  • Meet with student-writers of the newspaper both individually and in groups as necessary to plan develop and improve their submissions to the paper.
  • Contribute one original article to each issue of Ka Ulu Hoi published during the GAs tenure.
  • Under the supervision of the director conduct research that will enhance the mentorship of student-writers.
  • Other duties as assigned by the director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Full time Graduate Student in good standing.
  • BA in Hawaiian language.
  • Ability to edit written Hawaiian using various strategies and in accordance with the context of language production (e.g. standard University Hawaiian versus native speaker language production).
  • Experience writing Hawaiian news articles and opinion pieces as well as the ability to mentor students relatively new to this practice.
  • Comfortable using Google Docs Microsoft Word and Zoom.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Current standing as a Graduate Student in Kawaihuelani.
  • Experience managing a professional website and/or social media account.
  • Experience taking video and stills for online publication.
  • Research experience in Hawaiian language newspapers.
