Scope of Responsibility:

The Analytical/Materials Chemistry Research Intern will work in Dr. Rihas research group on projects related to analytical and materials chemistry. This position will provide the student intern with exposure to a variety of analytical and materials chemistry techniques and methodologies not typically encountered in the classroom and instructional laboratory. The intern will under direct supervision from Dr. Riha perform experiments that support the research goals of the group such as quantitative instrumental analysis solution formulation materials synthesis and characterization or thin film fabrication and processing.

Specific Duties:

Research Intern Duties

  • Regularly meet with mentor to plan conceptualize and coordinate research efforts
  • Maintain a well-documented and up-to-date virtual laboratory notebook
  • Become familiar with the scientific literature associated with the project
  • Collect analyze and communicate results with Dr. Riha and other group members
  • Analyze materials and mixtures with a suite of analytical instrumentation such as UV-vis-NIR potentiostat X-ray diffractometer Raman Microscope IR and scanning differential thermogravimetric analyzer
  • Perform materials synthesis using air-free techniques
  • Fabricate thin films via wet-chemical deposition methods
  • Maintain a clean safe and organized work environment
  • Collaborate with other group members
  • Be willing to be a project lead and help train in new group memebers

Administrative Duties

  • Create and maintain consistent work schedule by the first week of each semester
  • Complete and submit all personnel information as required by deadline including timecards and any changes to schedule
  • Respond to email correspondence within 24 hours
  • Maintain professionalism within workspaces
  • Participate in and presents at departmental initiatives events and activities as requested

Skills/Requirements:

  • Highly motivated to conduct research and eager to learn new techniques
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory environment and experience using basic chemistry lab instrumentation
  • Must be comfortable working with hazardous materials and must comply with all health and safety regulations
  • Completed CHEM248 with a grade of B or higher
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel Word and PowerPoint)
  • Must have the ability to work individually as well as in a team environment excellent interpersonal skills and must work efficiently under firm deadlines
  • Must have excellent creativity attention to detail problem-solving and be highly organized and process driven

Qualifications:

To qualify for this internship applicants must be enrolled in at least twelve undergraduate credits per semester be in good academic standing with the University and maintain a 3.0 in-major GPA (note: Freshman/Sophomore status requires 3.0 cumulative GPA). The position requires the ability to work approximately 5-10 hours per week during the semester. Winterim hours may also be available but are not guaranteed. Majority of scheduled hours will fall between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday). This position offers some flexibility for remote work. Note: This position can qualify for internship or experiential learning credit.

Compensation

$15.00 per hour (The Analytical/Materials Chemistry Intern position is funded through the UWSP Pathways Internship Program)

Within this position the intern will:

  • Develop time management and organizational skills to complete project goals by established deadlines within a research laboratory setting
  • Gain experience in designing and carrying out scientific experiments
  • Gain hands-on experience utilizing analytical and materials chemistry instrumentation
  • Develop problem-solving analytical reasoning and critical thinking skills as they apply to scientific problems
