Reviews coded medical records for coding accuracy and appropriate assignment of CPT and ICD-10 codes and for required documentation for CDI (Clinical Documentation Improvement). Coordinates resolution of unbilled claims. Investigates and resolves issues relating to claim denials from third party payers.

Coordinates and performs work of an Interventional Radiology Coding Specialist. Distributes checks work quality trains employees provides employee performance data and fosters process improvements.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Reviews coded medical records for coding quality assurance. Provides instruction and feedback to coding staff regarding proper coding as necessary.
2. Analyzes medical record documentation including review of tests and reports and assigns appropriate ICD CM (current edition) primary and secondary diagnoses and procedure codes according to Official Coding Guidelines. Utilizes CPT 4 and HCPCS classification systems as required.
3. Abstracts and enters all codes into the hospital computer system.
4. Distributes and monitors the flow of work for coding staff. Provides training and technical assistance to employees within the assigned work area. Assists manager in assuring that assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources materials and methods. Provides recommendations to manager or supervisor for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. Relays work instruction from the manager.
5. Alerts management to any coding irregularities or trends contrary to policy/procedure so that corrective measures can be taken.
6. Assists in resolving incomplete and missing chart documentation in order to expedite chart abstraction and billing.
7. Maintains direct and ongoing communications with other coding and billing personnel to maximize overall effectiveness and efficiency of the operation.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Level of knowledge equivalent to an Associate or bachelors degree in Health Information Management and an AHIMA certification; Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCS-P) is required.
2. Certifications from the NHA AAPC or other professional Coding associations will be considered.

Preferred:
1. Specialty certification/s desired.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Knowledge of ICD-CM (current edition) and CPT-4 HCPCS coding systems 3rd party payer requirements and federal/state guidelines and regulations pertaining to coding and billing practices required.
2. Requires intermediate level computer skills with the ability to use standard offce software applications such as Microsoft Office Excel and Word.
3. Requires good interpersonal and communications skills and demonstrates professionalism when working with team members management and other staff members.
4. Demonstrated leadership ability required. The ability to lead organize and support the work of the coding specialists is a primary function of this position. Ability to problem-solve and to organize and prioritize work to meet strict deadlines.

Preferred:
1. Five years of medical abstraction and coding experience or related work experience.

Unless certification licensure or registration is required an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies including age-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
