Job Summary

You will be part of the Nautical and Coastal team assisting with managing the safe and sustainable operation of the regions harbours and coastlines. This community role involves engaging with harbour users both on and off the water promoting maritime safety safe boating practices and education and supporting compliance with local navigation bylaws.

Youll be part of a team that responds to maritime emergencies gathers incident data and contributes to water safety education programmes. Additionally youll assist in delivering aspects of the Councils coastal responsibilities under the Resource Management Act and help monitor vessel traffic movements.

While this role does not carry enforcement powers it offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in our coastal community.

This is a casual summer position based out of Picton.

You will hold a Certificate of Competency appropriate for the role. You will be a reliable team player that can foster the energy and enthusiasm of a small but highly capable team. While having a good understanding of maritime navigation processes maritime communications tools and the devices used in the management and tracking of vessels both at sea and within coastal areas.

You will be physically fit and ready to work in isolated and remote environments when required. Your skills and experience will be matched by your ability to remain level-headed during emergencies. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and will be effective in addressing matters of maritime safety in a public forum on a boat at the boat ramp or on the wharf.
