Job Summary

The Supervisor of Alternative Education provides instructional and operational leadership for Bedford County Public Schools alternative education programs. This position oversees the Alternative Education Center virtual/remote learning General Education Diploma (GED)/High School Equivalency (HSE) programs homeschool credit-bearing summer school and homebound services. The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that students receive high-quality learning opportunities and that staff and programs operate in alignment with division goals policies and state/federal requirements.

Essential Duties

  • Lead and supervise all alternative education programs including the Alternative Education Center GED/HSE programs virtual learning homeschool and homebound instruction.

  • Provide instructional leadership to ensure curriculum instruction and assessment practices are rigorous aligned with standards and priorities and responsive to student needs.

  • Supervise direct and evaluate assigned staff including recruitment hiring training and performance management.

  • Promote a positive school culture grounded in high expectations of student conduct and enforce discipline in accordance with School Board policy and Student Code of Conduct.

  • Prepare manage and monitor program budgets in compliance with BCPS policy.

  • Supervise accurate recordkeeping for student progress attendance and program reporting.

  • Communicate effectively with staff families and community partners through reports presentations meetings newsletters and conferences.

  • Coordinate staff professional learning and provide in-service training on instructional practices and student supports.
  • Collaborate with the Susie G. Gibson Science & Technology Center Principal to oversee campus-wide operations and safety including emergency preparedness and facility management.

  • Coordinate and oversee the BCPS credit-bearing summer school program.

  • Serve as liaison between the division and community fostering collaboration and engagement in alternative education initiatives.

  • Participate in Individualized Education (IEP) meetings Best Interest Determination (BID) meetings and other student support services meetings as needed to ensure the appropriate provision of services and programming for all students.

  • Act as the administrative head of alternative education programs delegating responsibilities as needed to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Collaborate with school and division leaders to support the effective collection analysis and use of division-wide behavioral and discipline data to guide decision-making and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with school and division leaders to strengthen site-based alternative programs such as In-School Suspension Alternative Learning Environments and Intervention Design Specialist services.

  • Make recommendations concerning the schools administration and instruction.

  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.

  • Ensure compliance with School Board policies division regulations and state and federal requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services or other appropriate administrator.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Must possess a Masters degree and Virginia Postgraduate Professional License and licensed in administration. Five (5) years successful experience as a teacher administrator or in a central office position.
