The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 or 4 located in Juneau!


What you will be doing:

This positionworks with a dedicated group of biologists and technicians to generate age data and life history information for commercial fisheries management. The successful applicant will collect process and archive groundfish and invertebrate fisheries samples for estimating ages. They would also purchase and expedite materials to support sampling and research as well as maintain laboratory facilities.

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game Division of Commercial Fisheries core service is to ensure the conservation of fish shellfish and aquatic plants based on scientifically sound assessments and to manage fisheries in the interest of Alaska residents. The Mark Tag and Age Lab Age Determination Unit (ADU) provides groundfish and invertebrate age and growth data critical to managing the States commercial resources. This position is responsible for processing biological samples taken from commercial fisheries and surveys. Further they will work with a team of biologists and technicians to produce data and address management directives.

The Age Determination Unit (ADU) is dedicated to producing quality data for fisheries management and the successful applicant will work alongside an upstanding network of scientists researchers managers biologists and technicians to support commercial fishery management. Members of the ADU receive extensive training and experience processing a variety of biological samples using an assortment of methods and assessing data using various databases and statistical software.


The working conditions you can expect:

The ADU is located in the University of Alaska Southeast Natural Science Research Lab in the Juneau Mendenhall Valley. Technicians process biological samples in a laboratory environment and use cutting equipment calipers analytical balances microscopes grinding machines alcohol burners and ovens to process samples run quality controls and produce age data. This position is responsible for maintenance of machinery laboratory purchases inventory and organization of historical archives. Additional duties for this position may include supporting other commercial fishery programs and on occasion participate in port and at-sea sample collection.

  • Desire to learn: interest in the mission of the program and drive to advance skillsets and the capabilities of the lab.

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.

First Aid/CPR firearm safety and water/boat safety. For those not already certified training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Minimum Qualifications

Fish and Wildlife Technician 3
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.

Fish and Wildlife Technician 4
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:

Flexible Staffing

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates eligibility. If hired at the lower level you will be promoted to the higher-level job class after completing the training plan and meeting the minimum qualifications.
