Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History

The Harris County Public Library (HCPL) system established in 1921 began as a collection of small libraries located in stores post offices and private homes. Over the years it has grown into a robust network comprising 26 branch libraries two technology service centers and two partner locations that provide collection and circulation services. HCPL serves the communities of unincorporated Harris County and cities without independent library systems.

In 2024 HCPL received the prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service the highest honor awarded to libraries in the United States. Bestowed annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) this award recognizes institutions that deliver exceptional service to their communities. What you will do at Harris County Public Library:

The Processing Technicians under the supervision of the Cataloging and Processing Manager are responsible for the preparation and maintenance of library materials for circulation. This position ensures that books media and other materials are accurately cataloged labeled and processed according to library standards and accessible for patron use.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive inspect and process library materials in all formats ensuring accuracy and readiness for circulation.

  • Apply barcodes RFID tags spine labels and other identifiers according to library standards and procedures.

  • Enter and update records in the Integrated Library System (ILS) for new repaired or withdrawn items.

  • Maintain accurate statistics of items processed update workflow spreadsheets and submit monthly reports.

  • Prepare and sort materials for branch delivery coordinating with staff to meet departmental goals and timelines.

  • Review processed materials for quality and accuracy; provide feedback to improve processes.

  • Monitor processing supplies and notify the appropriate staff when replenishment is needed.

  • Participate in staff meetings committees and required annual training to support professional development and departmental initiatives.

  • Assist with special projects such as collection shifts re-labeling or bulk updates and perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency
Experience:
  • Six (6) months of previous library clerical or data entry experience


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment

  • High level of manual dexterity

  • Effective time management to handle multiple tasks and meet departmental deadlines.

  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling cataloging and record updates

  • Great communication skills (written & verbal)

  • Work both independently and as part of a team in a production-focused environment.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word Excel PowerPoint & Outlook) and standard Web browsers

  • Maintain a high level of accuracy and organization in repetitive tasks.

  • The position is generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours may vary based on the departments business needs.

  • This job typically operates in a professional office environment.

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • At times work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.

  • There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.

Physical Demands:
  • Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking standing stooping bending reaching lifting and carrying.Ability to lift carry and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts carries and exerts up to 40 pounds.
