Possession of valid Class I and Class IV permits issued by the State Fire Marshal in accordance with Section 633.061 Florida Statutes.

Job Description:

Perform monthly/annual inspections of portable fire extinguishers fire hoses and pre-engineered fire suppression systems in various buildings/locations on-campus and off campus. Complete required swap-outs of extinguishers needing 6-year or 12-year maintenance. Responsible for recognizing discrepancies and recommending the correct types of fire extinguishers required for fire protection in all
hazard areas including special and high hazard areas (i.e. laboratories flammable storage electrical etc.) in accordance with state fire code requirements for all locations assigned to route. Perform related duties for the efficient operation of the Fire Equipment Services Unit. Walk five (5) to 10 miles per day carry 60 pounds (lbs.) (up to six 5 lb. ABC extinguishers or two 10 lb. ABC extinguishers) climb ladders traverse steps and have a safe/acceptable driving record. Work in high dark and/or enclosed spaces. Maintain 100% completion rate of monthly fire equipment inspections on assigned route.

Perform monthly inspections of portable fire extinguishers fire hoses and pre-engineered fire suppression systems for the assigned route of equipment in accordance with Florida State Fire Equipment Dealer permits Class 02 and 04. Inspection rate varies monthly.

Perform annual maintenance on all types of portable fire extinguishers and fire hoses (2700 units) for certification and tagging purposes.

Operate University of Florida (UF)/state vehicle(s) to and from inspection sites that requires a valid driver license.

Perform related duties for the efficient operation of the Fire Equipment Services Unit.

Responsible for recognizing discrepancies and recommending the correct types of fire extinguishers required for fire protection in all hazard areas including special and high hazard areas (i.e. laboratories flammable storage electrical etc.) in accordance with state fire code requirements for all buildings/locations on assigned route.

Install inspect test recharge repair and certify all types of pre-engineered fire suppression systems.

Perform low-pressure hydrostatic tests 6-year maintenance and repairs of all types of fire extinguishers (does not include any high-pressure hydrostatic testing).

Repair recharge and service all types of fire extinguishers including carbon dioxide (CO2) units

Work hours Monday through Friday 07:30 AM to 04:30 PM - 40 hours per week

  • Travel to and from inspection site locations

Early morning night and weekend duty hours for pre-engineered fire suppression system responsibilities

A criminal background and post offer health assessment.

Expected Salary:

$19.00 - $21.00 hourly commensurate with education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Preferred:

EDUCATION & TRAINING: High school diploma EXPERIENCE: One to two (1-2) years of fire safety experience

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of state code requirements for maintaining inspecting installing repairing recharging and servicing all types of fire extinguishers (including CO2) and fire hoses
  • Knowledge of the procedures and methods of maintenance and/or operation of fire extinguisher equipment
  • Knowledge of procedures and state code requirements for hydrostatic testing of water water chemical and dry chemical types of fire extinguishers
  • Knowledge of installing and inspecting all types of pre-engineered fire extinguishing systems
  • Knowledge of safety procedures required in maintenance installation of extinguishers and repair work

SKILLS: Skill in using appropriate hand and power tools in maintaining and installing extinguishers and in repair work

ABILITIES

  • Ability to operate Windows based programs and use Windows Mobile Pocket Scanner
  • Ability to read building blueprints and floor plans and blueprints and specifications of manufacturers of pre-engineered fire extinguishing systems
  • Ability to demonstrate the proper use of fire extinguishers and other fire-fighting equipment
  • Ability to inspect install repair and recharge fire equipment and mechanical shop equipment
  • Ability to take accurate measurements
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Ability to plan organize and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to walk 5 to 10 miles per day
  • Ability to carry 60 lbs. (up to six 5lb. ABC extinguishers or two 10lb. ABC extinguishers)
