:59 PMYou love the craft of writing and can apply your skills to serve a wide variety of audience needs be it iterative one-line updates or working through stories that have sensitive editorial or legal considerations. You consume all forms of news and youre excited about the possibilities that digital offers which includes an integrated text video and audio experience. Youre connected to GTA communities and you want to make sure the stories of the people in those communities are told.
You are a keen observer focused on reaching new and younger audiences and people in underserved communities through your story pitches the people you choose to interview and the techniques you use to present stories.
Youll operate independently under the direction of a senior producer. While youre a self-starter youre joining a team where collaboration and communication are essential both within your local team and with colleagues across CBC.
Youre technically adept and if you are not familiar with all of the CBCs tools youre willing to learn. You understand the importance of video storytelling on all of CBC Torontos digital platforms including live streaming and live story pages.
We are hiring for the following digital writer positions:
1 full-time permanent employee assigned to Wednesday-Sunday early morning shift (0500 start Wed-Fri 0600 start Sat-Sun)
1 7-month full-time temporary role
2 part-time permanent employees assigned to weekends
Candidates selected to proceed to the interview process will be asked which positions theyre interested in.
Key tasks:
Write breaking news and in-depth stories for daily deadlines.
Pitch original story ideas chase and interview guests.
Package stories incorporating innovative use of video graphics links and photos.
Write stories based on press releases interviews gathered for broadcast or aired during live-streamed events and filling gaps as needed.
Write and test headlines that draw people in both on desktop and mobile devices.
Curate the online news lineup.
Write manage and deploy mobile push notifications.
Contribute to write for and curate live page events.
Take photos when required.
Edit and publish video to digital platforms.
Edit stories written by team members when needed.
Write and post stories for social media accounts when needed.
What you bring to the role:
As proven in your attached portfolio or website:
Ability to generate pitch and pursue strong original stories.
Track record of connecting with local communities.
Demonstrated professional experience using various news platforms including digital social.
Experience editing visual elements including photography and video; audio; text; digital interactives and social.
Advanced knowledge of web mobile and social media tools and industry trends.
Ability to work in high-pressure environments and under public scrutiny.
Ability to work independently with superior problem-solving skills and objectivity.
Ability to forge positive team relationships where you value collaboration transparency respect and inclusiveness.
Demonstrated connection to the diversity of the GTA.
Three years of previous related experience.
A university degree or college diploma in journalism or related fields is preferred.
Ability to work a variety of shifts including early mornings evenings weekends stat holidays and overtime.
Operational requirements:
You will be working with an online content management system to edit manage and publish content (Polopoly CMS).
You are adept using (or learning) audio and video editing software for listening back to interviews and basic editing (Dalet Adobe Audition Media Central).
This position requires you to work in the CBC News Toronto office full-time.
