Engineer I/II/III (Alaska Railroad Employees Only)

This position is open to current ARRC Employees only.

Purpose of Position:

FACTOR 1: Technical and Operational Knowledge

• Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of North American engineering principles and practices;
• Applies advanced analytical skills to inconclusive partial or variable data to: identify project needs scope and design criteria; develop designs; generate Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) cost estimates; and recognize and manage risks effectively; and
• Proficient in project management methodologies throughout the Design Life-Cycle.
• Thorough understanding of the AutoDesk suite of programs with an emphasis on AutoCAD to complete design elements and/or full packages;
• Experienced in the use of Microsoft Offices suite of programs with an emphasis on Word and Excel; and
• Application of standard specifications to and the generation of specifications (special provisions) for the work being designed.

FACTOR 2: Analytical Skills and Impact

• Utilizes strong analytical capabilities to drive value engineering risk mitigation and resource optimization through the iterative design process;
• Integrates lessons learned from past experiences to enhance design efficiency and operational performance;
• Balances multiple considerations including safety infrastructure performance cost-effectiveness risk management resource allocation and stakeholder satisfaction.

FACTOR 3: Supervision and Control

• Manage project resources (individually and as part of a cross-functional team) effectively including workforce requirements contract services and materials;
• Provides oversight direction and coordination to consultants contractors and internal teams;
• Drives project development throughout cross-functional teams by influencing without authority;
• Formulates recommendations and participate in the formation and/or revision of policy standards;
• Exercises independent judgment while fostering a collaborative team environment;
• Advises on the procurement of equipment services supplies materials and/or merchandise;
• Recommends payment for services provided under your purview from suppliers consultants and contractors;
• Provide consultation or expert advice to senior leadership; and
• May be responsible for providing supervision and/or mentorship to junior engineers.

FACTOR 4: Communication

• Communicates effectively with stakeholders at all levels including internal teams clients regulatory agencies and the public; and
• Demonstrates clarity and precision in conveying technical information through plans and specifications.

FACTOR 5: Working Conditions

• Works in both office and field environments including project sites and other ARRC facilities; and
• May encounter working at heights environmental extremes and hazardous conditions requiring physical agility and occasional lifting up-to fifty (50) pounds.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or a Master of Science in a subdiscipline of Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution;
• Holds an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or be able to obtain one within six (6) months from date of hire;
• Demonstrates hands-on experience using AutoDesk AutoCAD;
• Must be able to work both as an individual contributor and within a team setting;
• Microsoft Office suite experience with an emphasis on Word and Excel;
• Excellent oral and written communication and project management skills;
• An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our corporate culture is a must; and
• Must possess a valid U.S. Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science degree in either Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited institution;
• Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Alaska or be able to obtain licensure within (6) months from date of hire through testing comity or reciprocity;
• Proficient in the use of the modeling and survey elements of AutoCAD Civil3D;
• Ability to apply standard plans specifications codes and industry standards to design projects;
• Two (2) years experience either in or supporting the North American railroad industry; and
• Experience in the field working on active heavy civil and/or structural project sites.
