Job Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care Urbandale Clinic is seeking a full-timePharmacy Technician Certified or Traineeto join our team. Under general pharmacist supervision coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of dispensing areas including prescription related & sterile product related functions. Prepares packages and safely compounds medications (including hazardous substances) accurately and efficiently. Requires collaboration with departmental and other staff. Under general supervision of the pharmacist-in-charge carries out activities supportive of development coordination and training of assigned areas. All pharmacy technicians trainees must be certified within one year of registering with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. If certification not achieved by the end of one year individuals will be terminated. Schedule:40 hours per week primarily scheduled between Monday through Friday. May require travel and assistance in Waukee or other nearby locations.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Careintends to hireat either the Pharmacy Technician Traineeclassification or Pharmacy Technician Certifiedbased on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Duties to include:

1. Prescription processing

o Enter/verify patient coverage/third party information.

o Verify correct quantity & day supply of medication.

o Correctly set-up prescription fill/refill for pick-up or delivery per established procedures.

o Document important notes as needed in Willow Ambulatory and/or Epic.

2. Fill/refill prescriptions

o Read label for accuracy and correct as needed.

o Label and package the correct medication.

o Generate and/or maintain appropriate records related to prescription dispensing.

3. Communicate with the public patients and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines. Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.

o Conduct interview with patient or patients representative to collect and record patient profile information including demographic information third party coverage information weight of pediatric patients medication allergy information medical conditions and current list medications being taken other than those presented.

o Determine waiting/pick-up time and prioritize accordingly.

o Recognize workflow patterns for effective triage of prescriptions.

o Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.

4. Successfully complete/pass aseptic compliances and pass didactic test on reoccurring basis as dictated by standard operating procedures.

5. Appropriately mix and label chemotherapy biologic therapy and supportivecare medications.

6. Performs cleanroom maintenance activities.

o Assist with cleaning & decontamination of PEC and SEC in accordance with SOPs.

7. Assist with upkeep and cleaning of other equipment and maintain records.

8. Unpack supply orders verifying correctness and delivering to correct stocklocation.

9. Stock of mixing room patient rooms and other areas asneeded.

10. Perform inventory maintenance activities.

o Review Ready to Dispense queue for medications that have not been picked up by patients and follow-up as needed.

o Assist with daily & monthly drug inventory counts as directed by the senior technician and/or supervisor.

o Conduct assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only)

11. Assist with training of new technicians and student technicians.

12. Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.

o Audit area for compliance with medication security measures segregation of dosage forms expiration dates approved samples Emergency Medication Tray expiration date and appropriate drug storage.

13. Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances including:

o Conduct weekly and monthly inventory counts as instructed by senior technician/pharmacist.

o Assist with drug diversion surveillance by auditing records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAINEE TECHNICIAN:

  1. Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  2. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment.
  3. High school diploma or the equivalent.
  4. Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN:

  1. Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  2. National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification. High school diploma or the equivalent.
  3. Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences or satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.

  • Experience with Public Contact/Customer Service

  • Experience with inventory maintenance activities
  • Experience working in team environment
  • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
  • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs
  • Experience working in environment requiring accuracy
  • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment.
