The Program
Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of person in their communities through a variety of programs and services.
As a Disability Service Worker you will encourage independence and community integration skills such as accessing community services through vocational recreational leisure activities.
The Position
The Disability Services Worker (DSW) under supervision of their supervisor facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical behavioural emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. Disability Service Workers develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community family members guardians and employers. The individuals provide independent personal care but may require prompting to have baths teeth/hair brushing and cleanliness. This position reports to the Team Leader and requires union membership with CUPE 1099.
In this position you will be required to travel between Vegreville Bruderheim Two Hills and Innisfree in your own vehicle to meet clients in their home &/or community. Mileage will be reimbursed according to Taproot policy.
Scheduling:
Two (2) temporary part-time positions working an average of 25 hours per week:
Various days and 8hour shifts as required
Duration of these positions are dependent on the incumbent
Bona Fide Occupational Requirement: This is a gender-specific position based upon the behaviour and needs of the persons served.
In Your Role You Will
Drive person in care (in your own vehicle) within the community.
Support individuals to build life skills and social/occupational skills independence and encourage participation and social interaction within the community.
Teach/assist the client with daily household tasks (food preparation laundry cleaning etc) and light personal care (grooming dental care bathing)
Drive individual in your own vehicle to appointments day programs community events etc..
Contribute toward design implementation and evaluation of individual service plans program specific policies & procedures.
Communicate/document information that relates to program changes/service recipient changes to peers ministry representatives and other stakeholders as required.
Observe/document needs of individuals in service.
A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview.
*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.
As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
Grade 12 High School Diploma
Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies Social Work Human Services Special Education or equivalent preferred
One (1) year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities & complex needs.
MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License with clear driving abstract and reliable transportation
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
Skills in assisting individuals in anger management daily living self help etc.
First Aid/CPR Certification
Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety as appropriate.
