SALARY RANGES:

Facilities Maintenance Worker I - $17.92 p/hour $3106.13 p/month $37273.60 p/year
Facilities Maintenance Worker II - $18.83 p/hour $3263.87 p/month $39166.40 p/year

Under general supervision maintains lawns grounds and other cultivated areas maintains equipment used in such activity; assists in the maintenance of Social Service facilities; performs related duties as required.

Facilities Maintenance Worker I
This is the trainee level class. Employees work under close supervision in a training status. Employees are expected to promote to Facilities Maintenance Worker II after successful completion of one year of experience and shall not remain in the Facilities Maintenance Worker I class beyond one year.

Facilities Maintenance Worker II
This class is distinguished from the Buildings and Ground Worker I classification due to its responsibility for work requiring either a greater knowledge of grounds maintenance methods and techniques or the coordination of the work of others in the performance of grounds keeping and related maintenance tasks. May coordinate and provide instruction to others in the performance of grounds keeping and related maintenance tasks.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. May perform limited building and facilities maintenance including the repair of light and plumbing fixtures and related equipment; painting; and spreading concrete.
  2. Using power and hand tools mows edges and weeds lawns flowerbeds and other landscaped areas; applies pesticides and herbicides; plants prunes or trims hedges trees and flowers and shrubs.
  3. Cleans walks parking areas and other areas of leaves and other debris; removes trash.
  4. Operates power mowers blowers sweepers edgers hedge trimmers clippers sprayers and other equipment or vehicles; makes minor repairs such as sharpening blades; performs routine maintenance and equipment safety inspection.
  5. Performs limited custodial work which may include sweeping mopping waxing and buffing floors stocking restrooms with supplies.
  6. Prepares areas for planting by clearing grading fertilizing and watering ground; prepares areas for rock beds and lays rock.
  7. Operates maintains and repairs in-ground sprinkler systems.
  8. According to established procedure purchases equipment materials or supplies necessary to complete a maintenance task.
  9. Delivers paper goods and supplies to facilities.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Facilities Maintenance Worker I:
Working knowledge of safe grounds maintenance methods and techniques; plants flowers and shrubs; basic building and equipment maintenance and repair; plant pests and diseases and the methods of control and eradication. Skill in the operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in maintenance work. Ability to perform heavy physical labor and lift heavy objects; understand and follow verbal and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Facilities Maintenance Worker II:
Considerable knowledge of safe grounds maintenance methods and techniques; plants flowers and shrubs; basic building and equipment maintenance and repair; plant pests and diseases and the methods of control and eradication. Skill in the operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in maintenance work. Ability to perform heavy physical labor and lift heavy objects; understand and follow verbal and written directions; work effectively in the absence of supervision; coordinate the work of others engaged in maintenance activity; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Facilities Maintenance Worker I:
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include one year of experience in gardening grounds and building maintenance such as experience gained as a Maintenance Aide in the County of Lake.

Facilities Maintenance Worker II:
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include three years of experience in gardening grounds and building maintenance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • A valid drivers license will be required at the time of interview. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Positions require pre-employment screening including background checks and fingerprinting.
  • Government agencies accessing US government information which includes federal tax information must ensure that background investigation requirements for all agency employees and contractors that have access to federal tax information are consistent to the IRS background investigation requirements for access to federal tax information. A background check is required for all Social Services positions. Background requirements consist of three components which include fingerprinting citizenship verification and local law enforcement checks. Applicable agencies must conduct investigations during time of hire and ensure a reinvestigation is conducted 5 years from the date of the previous background investigation for each employee that has access to federal tax information.
  • Lake County is required to verify Employment and Education if a conditional offer of employment is made to an applicant.
  • Lake County offers: Flexible Office Hours available for most positions; Monday Friday with a variety of schedules between 6:30am - 7:00pm.
  • Work remotely from home available for some positions upon Lake County Department of Social Services Approval.

EXAMINATION INFORMATION

Supplemental Questions Examination Weighted 100%

The Supplemental Questions examination is designed to elicit a range of specific information regarding each candidates knowledge skill abilities and potential to effectively perform the duties relative to the classification. Responses to the questions will be assessed based on pre-determined rating criteria. All applicants must complete all questions to receive a score. To obtain a position on the eligible list candidates must receive a minimum rating of 70% on the examination. Competitors who do not submit responses to the supplemental questions by the deadlinewill be disqualified.

Examination administration and processing time is approximately two weeks after the closing date of the job bulletin.


ELIGIBLE LIST INFORMATION

A departmentalopeneligible list will be established for the county of Lake. The list will be utilized for 12 months after it is established unless the needs of the service and conditions of the list warrant a change in this period.


RETEST PERIOD

Once you have taken the examination you may not retest for SIX (6) MONTHS from the established eligibility date.
