The purpose of the Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) is to promote and protect health and disability services consumers rights and to facilitate the fair and efficient resolution of complaints relating to infringement of those rights.

As New Zealands health watchdog the Commissioner is involved in a wide spectrum of health concerns to ensure accountability in the healthcare system and promote high standards of care.

As a Senior Complaints Assessor youll lead the assessment and resolution of complex complaints involving multiple providers clinical disciplines and legal frameworks.

Youll apply advanced analytical thinking and sound legal and ethical reasoning to interpret expert advice assess systemic issues and contribute to fair timely and high-quality outcomes. Youll work closely with senior Decision-Makers and Deputy Commissioners providing insight and context to support robust decisions that uphold consumer rights and promote accountability across the health and disability sector.

This is a senior role within the team with real influence not only will you manage complex cases but youll also help shape the capability and culture of the team. Youll mentor and coach junior staff contribute to peer review and quality assurance and support continuous improvement through structured feedback and leadership.

Youll also play a key role in identifying equity concerns and embedding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Mori principles into everyday practice ensuring culturally responsive and fair outcomes for all consumers.

Were looking for someone with:

  • Exceptional writing and communication skills including the ability to explain complex legal and ethical concepts clearly.
  • Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to synthesise large volumes of information and apply legal and ethical reasoning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with people from all walks of life.
  • Experience mentoring or coaching others and peer reviewing.
  • Resilience and emotional maturity with the ability to manage sensitive subject matter and maintain neutrality.
  • A genuine interest in health and disability rights and a commitment to equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi

A relevant tertiary qualification (law health or disability-related fields are an advantage)

  • At least four years relevant experience in complaints resolution investigations or a related area.

Awhe utu - Salary range

As part of our remuneration framework the base salary midpoint is $90191 and actual salary is dependent on skills and experience.
