Summary: We are looking for a highly organized and experienced Laboratory Research Manager to oversee the daily operations of the CHME and Freeport McMoran Quality Laboratories. Youll be a key part of our team responsible for ensuring our labs are safe compliant and operate efficiently.

Classification Summary:
Manages and leads the integrated support activities for a scientific research laboratory or program devoted to the execution of a range of related specialized and innovative research initiatives of significant scientific stature. Coordinates collaborative research projects; develops research concepts and protocols; guides leads and/or oversees the work of research staff; and establishes and manages research technology and facilities; develop and administers program budgets and funding.

Classification Standard Duties:
Leads coordinates and establishes a range of collaborative laboratory and/or field research projects involving other university departments and external research entities. Designs and implements new research concepts protocols and procedures within field of professional specialty applying diversified knowledge of relevant scientific principles practices and and administers program budgets and funding and oversees the day-to-day administration of the current knowledge of technological developments and trends in area of specialty; identifies current and future technology needs and introduces and establishes innovative technology to directly support on-going research activities. Collects analyzes and interprets data; prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs as appropriate to the specific position; prepares manuscripts for publication; presents research results to scientific conferences and other groups. Provides supervision and leadership to technical staff engaged in the execution of research protocol and in the operation of scientific research equipment and technology. Provides technical expertise consultation and leadership to scientific professionals and collaborators within area of specialty. Prepares grant proposals and manages contracts and grants for various projects. Participates in the departments financial planning; coordinates the preparation of operating budgets and projections and monitors and controls expenditures against budget. Oversees and coordinates the setup operation maintenance and troubleshooting of the programs equipment instrumentation and facilities; ensures compliance with environmental safety and infection control regulations and standards. Participates in development implementation and maintenance of policies objectives short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain accurate real-time chemical inventory of the over 1000 items in the CHME and Freeport McMoran Quality Laboratories.
Maintain operability and dictate requirements for use (procedures training needs operational limits etc.) of departmental analytical devices and laboratory support equipment. Maintain and audit log books for equipment use and maintenance.
Operation and maintenance: Gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GCMS) Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) Total organic carbon/ total nitrogen analyzer (TOC/TN) Electrokinetic analyzer Ion chromatography system (ICS) Microwave digester Adsorption analyzer Water purification system Thermogravimetric analyzer High performance liquid chromatography system.
Coordinate with Dept admin and COE Safety to place purchases related to laboratory operations including chemicals lab supply replacement parts maintenance items etc.
Functions as chemical hygiene officer in CHME teaching and research labs (including review assistance with Experimental Safety Plans maintaining lab commissioning records and database of active expired and retired ESPs assist with development and delivery of regular departmental safety meeting content).
Develop internal audit form and perform audits of laboratory workspaces identifying and flagging unsafe conditions and working with COE Safety on a resolution. Maintain log of audit findings and resolutions.
Develop and maintain SOPs for departmental analytical devices and laboratory support equipment.
Maintain safety and environmental systems such as waste accumulation points access chains fume hood airflow evaluations signage DI water system eye-washes and safety showers.
Train researchers on laboratory-specific standard operating procedures. Operation and maintenance of special instruments (such as on coupled plasma mass spectrometer high pressure liquid chromatograph gas chromatograph mass spectrometer ion chromatograph total carbon analyzer and microwave digester).

Risk: Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
