Job Responsibilities


  • Perform limnological and chemical analyses of drinking water samples for regulatory and monitoring purposes to assure safe drinking water.

  • Collect and analyze routine and regulatory drinking water samples.

  • Operate analytical instrumentation likedescreteanalyzer gas chromatographs total organic analyzer inductively coupled argon plasma mass spectrometer various meters equipped with selective electrodes microscopes and general chemistry tests.

  • Understand andmonitorchemical and limnological processes in the drinking water sources and the distribution system.

  • Review data for correctness and follow all laboratoryestablishedQuality Assurance/Quality Control protocols. Peer review other analysts data.

  • Provide technicalassistanceto other staff in fields of expertise.

  • Clearly communicate orally and in writing the technical aspects of drinking water analytical results to technical and non-technical staff within and outside of the utility.

  • Be familiar with a wide variety of computer software such as LIMS MS Office and various other packages.

Qualifications


Experience:One year experience in water microbiology water biology or water chemistry laboratory

AND

Education:ABachelorsdegreein Biology Chemistry or a related field.

Experience and Education Equivalency:Other combinations of education training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability


License Certification and Other Requirements:


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Most work is performed in the SPU Water Quality Laboratory.

  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather traffic hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.

  • May beto lift over 50 pounds.

  • May beto stand walk or bend for extended periods of time.

  • Overnight travel may be.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in a laboratory setting analyzing drinking water.

  • Three years of experience working with a variety of laboratory instruments: Gas Chromatographs Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma Mass Spectrometer TOC Analyzer Discrete Analyzer variousmetersand probes.

  • Knowledge of drinking water regulations andmaximumcontaminant levels (MCLs).

  • Understanding of online water analyzers.

  • Ability to work within the organizational framework of SPU Workplace Expectations including our values on Safety Respect Diversity Trust Humor Productivity Integrity Innovation Partnership and Accountability.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within a multicultural workforce serving diverse customer bases.

The full salary range for this position is: $45.02 - $52.60 per hour.
