Description of Work



The North Carolina State Highway Patrols primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as addition to enforcing the states traffic laws state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur.

The primary purpose of the State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Enforcement Administration Section is to promote highway safety highway infrastructure protection enforce all state and federal laws regulating highway and commercial vehicle operations resulting in reduction in crashes injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.

The Weigh Station Operator (WSO) works under the supervision of a sworn member of the State Highway Patrol. The WSO is responsible for assisting in the daily activities that are performed at the troop weigh stations and mobile weigh stations during special operations such as Road WATCH or when the troop weigh station is non-operational. The WSO monitors trucks entering weigh stations for erratic driving equipment safety detects violations of size/weight laws including compliance with the vehicle registration requirements international fuel tax agreement international registration plan state and local fuel tax laws Commercial Drivers License compliance and insurance requirements to meet federal and state laws. *This position is assigned to Troop B District 9 and the physical work location is Lumberton (Robeson County.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) M-F 8am-5pm with State Benefits.

Job duties/responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Scales Operation (30%)
  • Using automated scale and Weigh in Motion(WIM)scales to determine weights of commercial motor vehicles and their cargo.

  • Utilizing measuring devices to calculate axle weight axle grouping height license and permit weight of those vehicles to detect violations. Errors may result injustice to the motoring public and may result in serious injuries or death to others.

  • Utilizing State Bridge charts o check for weight violations and using the FuelTaCS systems to issue civil penalties for over axle axle grouping registration fuel tax insurance and permit violations.

Weight Enforcement (30%)
  • Maintaining compliance with the International Fuel Tax and International Registration Plan.

  • Issuance of temporary permits and receipts for citations and permits.

  • Using the reciprocity manual to determine tolerance and registration requirements for out of state vehicles.

  • Monitoring commercial motor vehicles for erratic driving and equipment violations.

Administrative Duties (15%)

  • Answering phones and taking messages.

  • Maintaining records including report preparation on vehicles checked weighed and assessed.

  • Properly identifying types of violations for reporting purposes required by the State Highway Patrol and Federal Highway Administration.

Public Contact (15%)

  • Communicating with the general public to explain local size and weight laws including taking complaints regarding weight violations.

  • Contacting out of state agencies for driver information including license and registration information.

  • Performing Traffic Safety Information Programs at the troop weigh station.

Equipment Operation (10%)

  • Operating office equipment including computers base radio fax machine telephone office calculator printer copier and credit card machine.

  • Operating Way In Motion (WIM) scales Truck Counter and other associated systems equipment.

  • Working in and around Commerical Motor Vehicles in order to perform inspections.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Must successfully complete the Weigh Station Operator Basic School and Field Training Program within one year of hire.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development(GED) diploma and one year of work experience in dealing with the public which requires the use of some basic mathematical skills.
