Reporting to the Warden this position is responsible for the supervision of subordinate HVAC staff in the Maintenance Department at a medium custody male correctional facility. Job responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Overseeing the operation maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration units and associated air handling chilled water distribution and control systems for a major correctional facility.
  2. Supervising and training assigned HVAC mechanics involved in the operation and maintenance of the physical plant and assuring that assigned staff are properly trained.
  3. Being responsible for maintenance of an effective preventive maintenance program and quality control on repair work performed on assigned systems or components.
  4. Supervising daily operation of the physical plant including boilers chillers generators and related switch gear.
  5. Receiving work orders setting priorities and making work assignments.
  6. Performing repairs and preventive maintenance tasks as needed and assigned.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies


  1. Documented experience in HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) Systems.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements



High School or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and up to three yearsof journey level experience in the installation maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers air handling chilled water distribution and control systems including one year at the journey levelor an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:
REQUIRES current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations part 82 subpart F.

The Division of Institutionsis one of the divisions in DAC andemploys a variety of staff operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels which include minimum medium and close. The Division of Institutions has a duty to provide a secure and safe environment along with the proper care and supervision for every individual in our custody.
