What is the role
As a Senior Project Accountant you will play a key role in supporting Project Managers and the Finance team by ensuring the financial health of projects is accurately monitored reported and maintained. This role involves overseeing project accounting activities from setup to closeout preparing and reviewing invoices and ensuring compliance with contractual and financial requirements. You will collaborate closely with Project Managers to review budgets forecasts and project progress while also managing reporting audits and process improvements to strengthen financial controls. Beyond core project accounting you will contribute to broader accounting functions including accounts receivable accounts payable reconciliations and subconsultant tracking. In this role your duties and responsibilities will include:
Core Project Accounting Responsibilities
- Set up projects prepare invoices and financial reports and monitor project status to ensure budgets remain accurate and up to date.
- Partner with Project Managers to review project progress invoices and budgets through monthly meetings and ongoing communication.
- Conduct monthly meetings with Project Managers to review invoices and project status.
- Provide accurate analyses on estimated cost to complete provisions and revenue recognition ensuring reliable financial reporting and forecasting.
- Ensure that your project is audit-ready at all times to assist the PM as much as possible and keep the PM up to date on any outstanding documents required for the project such as signed contracts change orders email authorizations sub-agreements etc.
- Apply proper revenue recognition in line with IFRS standards ensuring billing does not exceed contract value and escalating issues where needed.
- Monitor WIP adjustments and deferred revenue ensuring accurate reporting and minimizing financial surprises.
- Manage project closeouts by resolving outstanding items and eliminating backlog or WIP in a timely manner.
Other Accounting Responsibilities
- Provide standard reports to assist PMs in assessing project nancial health and planning/managing projects.
- Support the implementation of electronic invoicing/AP or other process changes.
- Assist in developing and implementing project controls and reports including accurate project budgets and updated contract values to aid in nancial risk management. Participate in the Year-End Financial Audit as needed.
- Continuously enhance professional skills and knowledge through training seminars workshops and involvement in professional associations to stay updated on trends software and technology.
- Manage other related tasks within the scope of the Finance and Accounting Department such as AR AP bank reconciliation and tracking of subconsultant agreements.
The qualifications you need:
- Post-secondary education in Accounting Finance or a related field
- 10 years of progressive experience in project accounting preferably within an engineering consulting professional services or project-based environment.
- Hands-on experience with Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint (or similar systems).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of other MS Office applications.
- Solid knowledge of project accounting principles revenue recognition (IFRS) WIP and deferred revenue.
- Proven ability to analyze financial data prepare reports and provide actionable insights to project teams.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with Project Managers Finance and senior leadership.
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize manage multiple deadlines and work with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills adaptability to change and a proactive solutions-focused mindset.
The work arrangement:
LEA operates in a hybrid environment to ensure flexibility safety and the well-being of everyone. Periodic attendance at our Markham office is expected to facilitate in-person learning of new tasks with experienced senior staff.
