Safety Superintendent
Position Summary
The Safety Superintendent is responsible for leading the health safety and environmental (HSE) program for a Baytown plant. This role ensures regulatory compliance oversees emergency preparedness and drives a strong safety-first culture. The Safety Superintendent develops and implements HSE policies and procedures manages safety training and communications and serves as a liaison between departments and external agencies. This position provides guidance and support to employees and leadership to maintain a safe work environment and continuously improve safety performance.
Essential Job Functions
Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) Operations
Lead the development implementation and continual improvement of health and safety programs policies and procedures.
Monitor compliance with all applicable local state and federal safety laws regulations and industry standards.
Conduct and oversee incident investigations emergency response planning contractor evaluations and safety audits.
Develop and lead the Emergency Response team including coordination of fire school and emergency response training.
Provide guidance and leadership to all levels of the organization regarding health and safety compliance.
Enhance communication between departments to ensure HSE policies are followed.
Build and maintain relationships with external agencies committees and organizations related to HSE initiatives.
Conduct hazard reviews implement corrective actions and recommend safety improvements.
Oversee the procurement and management of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety-related resources.
Lead and organize safety training workshops and safety committee activities.
Conduct contractor safety orientations and manage contractor prequalification evaluations.
Maintain OSHA logs safety records and reports for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
Coordinate emergency response drills and ensure site readiness for incidents.
Promote a safety-first culture through proactive communication employee engagement and recognition programs.
Other Responsibilities
Identify opportunities for safety process improvements and cost efficiencies.
Maintain high ethical standards professional conduct and excellent plant housekeeping.
Perform special projects and additional duties as assigned by management.
Maintain open communication with leadership employees and external contacts.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety Environmental Science or related field required; professional certifications (e.g. CSP CHST) preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience in a petrochemical or similar industrial environment with experience in safety and environmental management.
Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations risk assessment hazard identification and root cause analysis.
Proven ability to lead incident investigations emergency response initiatives and safety training programs.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management software.
Strong organizational communication leadership and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with 5S principles and continuous improvement strategies preferred.
Ability to work flexible hours including weekends or on-call as required.
