Job Description

Description

This position supports the organization preservation and accessibility of both digital and physical collections in the archives and special collections and plays a vital role in administering and maintaining the archival database assisting with digital preservation efforts and contributing to the development and promotion of archives and special collections. This position collaborates closely with library staff faculty and students to support academic and research needs while gaining hands-on experience with archival practices and digital preservation tools. Responsibilities include promoting the archival collections and digital repository organizing digital materials according to best practices and working across departments to ensure that collections are preserved accessible and aligned with institutional goals.

Essential Job Duties

Digital Preservation (50%)

  • Assist in managing and maintaining the digital collections including uploading organizing and updating digital files in the institutional repository;
  • Support the implementation of digital preservation workflows and tools to ensure long-term accessibility of digital materials;
  • Assist with monitoring the condition and integrity of digital files;
  • Create basic metadata and apply standards to ensure materials are discoverable and well-organized;
  • Stay informed of evolving best practices and technologies in digital archiving through professional development and training opportunities;
Archives/Collection Development (40%)
  • Organize and maintain physical archival collections by processing newly acquired collections creating archival finding aids and updating the online archival database;
  • Assess and process donated books and materials for potential inclusion in the librarys collection;
  • Aid in tracking collection usage and identifying gaps or areas for growth;
  • Support the creation and maintenance of displays and exhibits that showcase library and archival materials.
  • Assist in setting up exhibits and with public outreach and communication;
  • Provide reference service for the archives and special collections;
Other Duties (10%)
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in history library science information studies or a related field is required;
  • Experience working or volunteering in a library archive museum or similar setting is preferred;
  • Interest in digital preservation and archival work is required;
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and follow detailed procedures is required;
  • Familiarity with archival online database management systems such as Archon or ArchivesSpace is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to learn and apply digital preservation and archival practices;
  • Comfortable working with digital tools and learning new software;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment;
  • Interest in archives libraries or digital content management;
  • Familiarity with or willingness/ability to learn about metadata copyright and digital rights in an academic setting.
