Job Summary:

The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I IV to join the Wastewater Treatment division in the Water & Sewer Department. The Maintenance Mechanic will report to the Maintenance Supervisor and will be responsible for maintaining the proper operation of all equipment buried and above ground assets directly and indirectly associated with the treated water storage tanks needed to operate the potable water system. The successful incumbent will provide daily preventative predictive and maintenance tasks on all process equipment inspecting tanks and infrastructure safety equipment and will be required to enter confined spaces as necessary. They will work with pumps motors compressors generators screens mixers grinders blowers and general plant infrastructure. The incumbent works in the proximity of electrical switchgears controls large confined bodies of water and chemicals such as ferric chloride.

Experience Knowledge Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

All levels:

  • Valid unrestricted drivers license.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Basic mechanical and electrical skills; familiarity with hand tools and equipment maintenance.
  • Familiarity with electrical safety techniques electrical diagrams and multi-meters.
  • Required to participate in a rotating on call schedule including nights weekends and holidays.

  • Must be able to respond on-site within 45 minutes for after-hours emergencies.

  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and physical as part of the pre-employment process.

Mechanic I:

  • Six (6) months to two (2) years of experience maintaining equipment of a small water system or similar field.

  • Basic skills using hand and power tools.

  • Basic knowledge of construction prints as-built drawings and GIS mapping.

  • Basic knowledge of confined space entry safety processes.

  • Basic knowledge of small electrical crane operation.

Mechanic II:

  • Two (2) to three (3) years of experience operating a small water system or similar field.

  • One (1) year of experience with SCADA and asset management related systems.

  • Demonstrated experience using hand power tools and multimeters.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment such as valves PRVs bearings seals packing belts and how they are used.

  • Moderate knowledge of construction prints as-builts and GIS mapping.

Mechanic III:

  • Four (4) years of experience repairing and troubleshooting a variety of mechanical equipment desired.

  • Four (4) years of experience in wastewater treatment field or industrial environment preferred.

  • Two (2) years of experience with SCADA and asset management related systems

  • Familiarity with electrical safety techniques electrical diagrams and multimeters.

  • Electrical troubleshooting skills desired or the ability to learn.

  • Current Colorado Water Professional Wastewater Operator Class D Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

  • Specialized training beyond high school as normally gained in a program of less than 18 months duration.

Mechanic IV:

  • Five (5) years of experience repairing and troubleshooting a variety of mechanical wastewater treatment related equipment at a comparable municipal or industrial facility.

  • Two (2) years of experience with SCADA and asset management related systems

  • May perform lead responsibilities in the absence of the Reservoirs Supervisor.

  • Current Colorado Water Professional Wastewater Operator Class C Certificationor ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

  • Current Class B CDL or higher or the ability to obtain within one (1) year.

Preferred:

  • Maintenance background in repair and upkeep of rotating equipment specifically as it applies to wastewater related processes (blowers boilers biogas equipment UV disinfection equipment etc.).
  • Current Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or higher or the ability to obtain within one (1) year preferred.

  • Two (2)-year certificate from a trade school related to the industrial mechanical or electrical environment preferred.

  • Current Colorado Wastewater Operator C Certificationor higher or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

  • Confined Space Rescue Certified

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Travel: Standard Local Travel - This position requires occasional local travel within the County. Employees may be expected to walk or drive short distances to attend meetings trainings or perform work at other City buildings or partner sites.

Essential Functions:

  • Reads and comprehends Operations & Maintenance (O&M) manuals mechanical and electrical drawings

  • Produces written records with clearly organized information.

  • Produces written records and organized information.

  • Works independently and follows safe work practices.

  • Works with a variety of hand and electric-powered tools.

  • Performs housekeeping duties or other tasks and responsibilities as may be assigned.

  • Daily rounds of the treated water storage tanks that includes operating a pocket colorimeter.

  • Verifies and calibrates pH and Chlorine analyzers.

  • Monitors and adjusts flows and chlorine dosages for the distribution system.

  • Inspects and repairs minor defects of the storage tanks according to the Storage Tank Rule.

  • Maintains the facilities for cleanliness.

  • Assists with maintaining the grounds of the storage tanks including mowing tree trimming fence repair etc. as needed.

  • Handles chemicals (Sodium hypochlorite) in a safe manor for treatment disinfection.

  • Keeps a safe working environment through confined space entry and wearing a harness during Tower inspections.

  • Operates using a SCADA system.

  • Communicates with other departments for flow adjustments and clear instructions.

  • Performs preventive predictive and corrective maintenance on equipment.

  • Creates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and adjusts them as needed

  • Orders and tracks Sodium hypochlorite levels and usages

  • Level IV mayperform lead responsibilities in the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Work and Physical Requirements:

Work Environment:

  • Available to work weekends holidays and participate in an on-call rotation schedule that is subject to change at any given time as needed.

  • Work in all weather conditions (heat cold wind humidity precipitation).

  • Exposure to machinery noise vibration and moving mechanical parts.

  • Exposure to biohazards chemicals dust fumes gases and poor ventilation.

  • Work around wastewater facilities electrical switchgear scaffolding high places trenches vaults and uneven/slippery terrain.

  • Frequent interruptions deadlines

Physical Demands:

  • Work in confined spaces (e.g. manholes excavations vaults).

  • Perform strenuous physical labor: lift up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.

  • Walk climb balance stoop kneel crouch crawl and reach in field conditions.

  • Use ladders awkward positions and heavy tools/equipment.

  • Bend twist and reach to load/unload equipment supplies and tools.

  • Strong visual acuity for close/distance vision color depth perception and focus.

  • Ability to read data/figures operate machines inspect defects and monitor gauges/dials.

  • Operate vehicles heavy equipment and precision tools.

  • Manual dexterity to handle tools and equipment safely and effectively.
