Job Description

Position Description for Craven County Schools New Bern North Carolina

The Craven County Schools Board of Education New Bern North Carolina is seeking a highly qualified Superintendent to lead the district and support its mission of ensuring success for all students.

McPherson & Jacobson L.L.C. Executive Recruitment and Development are engaged as consultants in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the School Board in identifying and screening the candidates.

Enrollment: 12400 Students

Location: The Craven County School District is located in eastern North Carolina in close proximity to the Crystal Coast beaches and is comprised of suburban rural and military communities. The district serves the cities of New Bern and Havelock and towns of Vanceboro Trent Woods River Bend Cove City and Dover and is home to MCAS-Cherry Point.

Salary: Regionally competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications

The Qualifications

The candidate must have the background skills and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership to include high expectations fiscal responsibility and maintaining a culture of accountability throughout the system. Doctorate degree is encouraged but not required; active North Carolina Superintendents license or eligibility to obtain. The Craven County Board of Education is seeking a candidate with the following desired characteristics:

  1. An educational leader with a proven track record of improving student and staff achievement. The new superintendent must demonstrate a knowledge of educational research and understanding of how curriculum and instruction work together to improve teaching and learning.

  1. The new superintendent must possess the visionary skills that allow him/her to come into the system with knowledge of the diverse communities and schools in the district (suburban rural and military) and ability to use that knowledge in assessing the needs of students staff and stakeholders to identify strategies that address the needs in an efficient and effective manner.

  1. The new superintendent should have a proven track record of effective budgetary practices that promote responsible fiscal monitoring and management of all school funds.

  1. A leader with superb communication skills who values transparency and is willing to listen and project honesty integrity and trust to sustain positive relationships with all stakeholders.

  1. The new superintendent must be confident in decision making and demonstrate a willingness to solve problems through sound conflict resolution techniques that include a deep understanding of crisis management theories.

  1. The new superintendent should possess an ability to build and sustain strong relationships with all stakeholders in an effort to move the school system forward in a collaborative manner that results in improvement and achievement of goals.

Search Timeline:

  • Closing date for applications: October 15 2025
  • School Board selects finalists to interview: November 10 2025
  • Finalists Interviews with the School Board: November 18-20 2025
  • Selection of new Superintendent: By December 1 2025
