Description

Position Objective: Provide support services for the Biospecimen Core as a Biospecimen Technician. The Biospecimen Core (BSpC) will enforce and maintain compliance of NHLBI investigators to policies and regulations pertaining to human biospecimens. BSpC will facilitate and accelerate research goals and ensure proper care and handling from specimen receipt to analysis and final disposition.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The candidate shall be responsible for the following:

Helpdesk Support for biospecimen database:

  • Respond to incoming biospecimen database helpdesk requests from end users through e-mail and/or by phone
  • Build rapport with helpdesk customers
  • Assists with data entry
  • Address hardware issues in-person (i.e. printers transmitters etc.)

Inventory of Frozen Biological Samples:

  • Organize specimens in freezers and discard specimens according to SOPs
  • Investigate missing specimens and return found specimens to inventory
  • Generate box layouts to reconcile specimens with database
  • Reconcile data and create reports from the BSI to identify discrepancies
  • Correct errors in the database
  • Assign tasks in requisitions

Retrieve Frozen Samples from Inventory:

  • Create requisitions to withdraw specimens
  • Confirm database modifications
  • Prepare specimens for shipment/ship samples: prepare shipping forms proper shipping containers/boxes and arrange for payment through purchase system (POTS)

Environmental Monitoring:

  • Operate the Rees environmental monitoring system
  • Manage the Annual Preventative Maintenance & System Validation Contract
  • Develop communicate and maintain NHLBI Rees System Programming & Database Standards
  • Schedule repairs with vendor as necessary
  • Create and administer end user accounts permissions and access rights
  • Inventory and stock hardware
  • Assure compliance of vendors contract: preventative maintenance annual validation and calibrations
  • Prepare and/or update training material and frequently asked questions for end users

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to work both individually and in a team-oriented environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be organized with a strong ability to multi-task prioritize and have a strong attention to detail
  • Must possess a high level of independent judgment and accuracy
  • Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve issues by using judgment that is consistent with standards practices policies procedures and regulations or law
  • Strong interpersonal skills including sensitivity discretion and diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff members and customers
  • Proficiency in the use of applicable computer software and the ability to use office and lab equipment
