CLASS SPECIFICATION
CLASS TITLE: Environmental Program AmbassadorDATE: January 2023
1. NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
Working under the general direction of a Supervisor the incumbent will tour the City collecting data implementing program enforcement actions and educating citizens in a variety of forums and locales including elementary middle and secondary schools malls and parks as well as participate in local community events along with delivering products and promotional material door-to-door. The primary duties of this position include assessing customer compliance collecting data removing contaminated carts from the curb documenting actions undertaken and providing public education of solid waste and environment program related data from across the community with a focus on data related to all aspects of the Citys solid waste collection urban wildlife and waste diversion and disposal operations.
The incumbent exercises some independence of judgement and action in the performance of assigned duties within established guidelines practices and procedures while unusual or complex problems are referred to a supervisor. The incumbent is accountable for care accuracy and attention to detail to ensure the accuracy of inspection records and that overall solid waste collection data is accurate. The work as outlined below is expected to occur mainly off-site (Citys curbside collection route public events etc.) with some in office work.
2. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Drive to different City locations to collect recycling contamination data at curbside and to deliver printed and verbal education.
Assess curbside cart contents for compliance with solid waste program and bylaw requirements.
Document actions taken collect and enter data via computerized tools.
Deliver products and or materials to residential customers.
Provide information to help residents improve their knowledge and understanding of provincial and City bylaws programs and initiatives such as waste reduction wildlife awareness and other environmental functions.
Attend team meetings related to the work.
Deliver a variety of outreach activities to support solid waste wildlife awareness and programs for use in schools malls parks and City sponsored events throughout the term of the assignment.
Assist with developing and implementing a variety of communication approaches to support solid waste wildlife awareness and climate action programs for use in schools malls parks City sponsored events etc.
Perform other related duties as required.
3. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Ability to exercise good judgement courtesy tact diplomacy and persuasion when dealing with the general public other city employees and representatives of private companies and other agencies.
Thorough knowledge of bylaws regulations programs and initiatives that govern activities in the department and ability to educate others on the same.
Ability to communicate effectively including presenting information to the public through various mediums.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy in the compilation of data and record-keeping.
Ability to understand and carry out effectively oral and written instructions and to maintain accurate records.
Ability to compile data and perform general work with computerized mobile equipment.
Ability to work independently and as part of team.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
