Data Protection Manager

We are currently looking for an experienced Data Protection Manager to join our Data Protection Team.

You will lead and develop our data protection team providing assurance for data protection activities across the service ensuring that we comply with our legal obligations to protect personal data.

Contract: Permanent

Working hours: 35 hours per week is full time. Where possible we are open to considering part time/flexible working patterns. Please let us know in your application your desired working pattern.

Reporting to Data Protection Officer

London docklands

Our permanent hybrid policy sees us all working at least four days across a fortnight in the office.

The data protection legislation is detailed and you will be an expert in the field being the escalation point for the team and wider organisation in respect of complex and sensitive data protection and privacy matters.

Youll be on the lookout for best practice and how we can use the latest developments to continuously improve how we deal with data protection. Youll bring that insight back to the ombudsman service to embed into your team and working with relevant senior colleagues across the organisation where necessary.

As a hands-on manager youll help manage and develop your team through coaching sharing knowledge and giving feedback in the moment encouraging continuous improvement. And youll provide support to senior leaders helping us deliver on our organisations wider objectives and commitments.

Key responsibilities

  • Helping the whole organisation comply with relevant legislative and statutory requirements for data protection including through promoting good practices and improving awareness of relevant policies and procedures
  • Managing our data protection awareness and communications programme ensuring timely and accurate data protection information is provided across the organisation
  • Understanding how the data protection function is performing against key performance indicators and identifying any concerns or observations with the DPO to influence the data protection action plan and report to our governance committees
  • Developing and maintaining our policies procedures privacy notices and guidance notes to ensure we maintain a strong data protection culture and they remain up to date
  • Managing our formal documented records of processing activities and establishing policies and procedures to ensure that it remains accurate and up to date
  • Establishing and managing our policies and procedures to ensure we appropriately manage data sharing decisions and working with colleagues in information security and legal to ensure that we have procedures in place to make sure that restricted transfers are made appropriately
  • Providing risk-based advice on DPIAs and advising on data protection risks across the service as necessary
  • Managing our data protection complaints procedures and ICO investigations for all data protection matters (except information rights requests)
  • Proactively monitoring and managing performance addressing issues effectively including listening and responding appropriately to customer feedback and service complaints
  • Providing coaching and professional development so your team can maintain and continually improve the skills they need to handle all aspects of information rights work effectively
  • Creating a culture where people in your team are encouraged and inspired to deliver measurable improvements to customers

To be considered for this role youll need to show us that youve got the skills and capabilities. Youll have to meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Experience of managing a team of specialist data protection experts
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of data protection legislation with the ability to apply this in a practical way to individual requests
  • Having a deep knowledge and understanding of data protection legislation with the ability to apply this in a practical way to individual requests
  • Experience in dealing with complicated and sensitive information quickly

We would also like you to have the following skills:

  • Influencing and persuading across a range of stakeholders and at a senior level
  • Planning and prioritising in a busy environment caring about achieving results as a team while being flexible
  • Demonstrating continued professional development in data protection
