The Department of General Services is seeking a Scientist for our Metals & Motor Fuels Group at the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS).In this position you will perform testing on motor fuels for consumer protection and label guarantees using ASTM International methods. You will use various techniques analytical instrumentation and quality controls in this role to produce defensible data and prepare lab reports in support of state programs for compliance monitoring and in the investigation of complaints. Analysis of over 4000 gasoline and diesel samples each year from service stations across the Commonwealth to ensure that citizens of the Commonwealth are receiving a fuel product that meets ASTM standards.

As part of the Metals/PM 2.5 & Motor Fuels Group in DCLS the Scientist Performs routine and emergency moderate to high complexity testing including training others. Performs limited method adaptation when approved by management method verification and validation. Confers with customers and provides technical guidance. Performs a variety of scientific procedures to support agencies of the Commonwealth including public health agriculture and environmental protection.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Support the proper performance and perform highly complex analyses throughout pre-analytical analytical and post-analytical phases of testing.
  • Demonstrates analytical proficiency and performs analyses according to DCLS standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all 3 phases of testing.
  • Support the DCLS Quality Management System in the performance of moderate to highly complex laboratory testing to ensure the accuracy and integrity of DCLS laboratory test results.
  • Support the needs of both internal and external customers and the Division

This position will be located in Richmond Virginia and must report on-site. Some weekends holiday and on-call work is required for the testing of emergency samples.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices for the handling of chemical microbiological infectious or toxic materials as applicable.
  • Experience following procedures.
  • Knowledge in Chemistry.
  • Knowledge in the operation of laboratory instrumentation and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge with recording and reporting QA QC and test results accurately.
  • Experience compiling and formulating data drawing conclusions and providing data interpretation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience troubleshooting laboratory equipment and/or instrumentation.
  • Experience in the calibration and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of sample preparation and quantitative analysis chemical principles testing procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge in the use of control charts.
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems.
  • Motor Fuel testing experience.
  • Experience in the use of sophisticated and complex computer interfaced instrumentation (Gas Chromatography (GC) Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMSMS) & Vapor Pressure).
