Our SEPE team currently has an exciting opportunity for a Public Engagement Manager based either in Heidelberg Germany or Hinxton UK. This role will lead the development and delivery of strategically-aligned community engagement at EMBL and working with the Science Education and Outreach Manager support larger scale outreach efforts at EMBL Barcelona Rome Grenoble and Hamburg.
Your role
Reporting to the Head of Science Education and Public Engagement your role will include:
Working with the SEPE team EMBL colleagues researchers at all stages of their career and community stakeholders to shape and strengthen a strategic community engagement programme across EMBL sites building strong relationships and tailoring approaches to local settings and community needs.
Designing and delivering inclusive engagement activities and events that connect communities with EMBLs science and research in collaboration with colleagues across the organisation.
Managing the community engagement programme and co-managing the outreach programme including planning process oversight and team coordination to ensure smooth delivery.
Leading a small dispersed team providing guidance support and performance oversight.
Collaborating effectively with other managers within the SEPE team to ensure alignment and integration of community engagement and outreach activity within the wider SEPE programme.
Overseeing the development and maintenance of relevant webpages ensuring content is relevant and accessible for target audiences and is up to date.
Supporting organisational culture change initiatives to embed public engagement as a core value and practice across the organisation.
Overseeing leading and contributing to the writing of reports and other publications.
Leading and contributing to relevant grant applications and engagement with existing and potential donors for support of SEPEs engagement programme in conjunction with EMBLs Office of Resource Development.
You have
Educated to first degree level or equivalent in scientific or other relevant field.
A minimum of five years experience working in public engagement with a focus on communities in a variety of settings and contexts.
Previous line management experience.
Demonstrable project management experience.
Experience of co-design and co-development with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience developing and delivering projects and programmes from initial concept through to implementation including evaluation and iteration.
Experience of remote project co-ordination across multiple locations.
Excellent organisation and time management skills and good attention to detail.
Strong interpersonal written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work autonomously or as part of a wider team.
Confident and engaging public speaker.
Excellent command of written and spoken English.
Competency with IT programmes including the Microsoft Office suite.
You may also have
Experience working internationally.
Experience of working in a European context across multiple countries cultures and languages
Experience of managing a dispersed team and working in a hybrid fashion
Proficient in either German Spanish Italian or French.
Experience of patient or public dialogue projects
Contract length: 3 years renewable to a maximum of 9 years
Salary: Grade 6 monthly salary from EUR 4.58037 (after tax and before 12.05% EMBL social security deductions) plus other paid benefits
