OPTOMETRIST Part Time

Location
Health Services Department at the
United States Penitentiary
Satellite Prison Camp (SPC) Lee.
Lee County Industrial Park Hickory Flats Road
Pennington Gap Virginia 24277.

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship Required
  • Clearance Requirements: Tier 1 Background Investigation National Agency Check with Law and Credit Check and fingerprints. (Standard Form 85).
  • Estimated Compensation: $63.00 to $65.00/hour (negotiable)
  • Relationship: 1099 Independent Contractor.

Working Hours

The Optometrist will normally work Monday through Friday (except for Federal holidays) normally between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. with thirty (30) minutes unpaid lunch period (if applicable). A session will equal one (1) hour. Each contractor visit will normally consist of seven and one-half (7.5) sessions not to exceed 15 hours per week

SUMMARY:

The Optometrist must have the ability to work with an adult in custody (AIC) population from a variety of cultural regional racial and ethnic backgrounds. Must have knowledge of routine office related duties including working knowledge of computers word processing programs and be able to type. The optometrist must possess good organizational skills good interpersonal relationship skills and be able to work effectively with the medical staff.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Must have a Doctor of Optometry degree from an educational program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) at the time the degree was obtained.
  • You must possess at least one (1) year of experience in Optometry.
  • You must have received a passing score on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) examinations and possess a current full and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State the District of Columbia the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States.
  • Certification in Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications and experience include:

  • Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting.
  • Additional professional education and certifications.

Attire

The contract employee is expected to wear professional clothing that is appropriate to the correctional environment while on duty; business attire or scrub-type uniforms are approved. No articles of clothing worn by the contract employee will be of a khaki tan khaki green tan dark green gray orange or camouflage color or pattern. Footwear will be closed-toe flat-bottom and completely cover the feet; fluid resistance and non-slip soles are preferred. Protective vests will be supplied by the institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Adhere to the administrative guidelines of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Bureau of Prisons Polices as it relates.
  2. Providing verification of credentials proof of malpractice insurance and medical indemnification insurance in the amount specified in the contract.
  3. Evaluation of patients as referred by the Medical Staff.
  4. Providing legible written reports on all patients evaluated to include but not limited to:
  • Perform Eye exams as requested;
  • Diagnosis of eye conditions;
  • Removal of foreign objects from the eye;
  • Physical findings;
  • Tonometry exams;
  • Recommendations for treatment and follow-up care;
  • Provide referral services to the Clinical Director for eye pathologies;
  • Prescribing corrective lenses/frames as appropriate;
  • Fitting of eye glasses and adjustment of frames;
  • Individualized adjustment of exam equipment as needed;
  • Contractor must complete a minimum of 20 and up to 30 scheduled exams per 7.5 session day;
  • Utilize the Bureau of Prisons Electronic Medical Record to document the eye exam
