Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington is seeking a passionate and accomplished academic to join Te Puna Hauora School of Health as a Pkenga Matua - Senior Lecturer or Ahonuku - Associate Professor in Pacific Health. This pivotal role blends teaching research leadership and community engagement with a strong focus on advancing health equity for Pacific Peoples.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as Global Health and Wellbeing and Advanced Health Statistics and Epidemiology.
  • Establish and maintain a robust research programme with emphasis on quantitative and Indigenous methodologies contributing to both academic excellence and real-world impact.
  • Cultivate interdisciplinary collaborations and workforce development initiatives that strengthen Pacific health outcomes.
  • Supervise postgraduate research students to successful completion.
  • Provide academic leadership and contribute to the Schools governance while actively engaging with Pacific communities and stakeholders.

You are a values-led academic dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Pacific Peoples through culturally grounded equity-focused research and education. Your work demonstrates a strong foundation in teaching research and community engagement and you are committed to fostering authentic partnerships with Pacific communities. You bring a collaborative spirit a proven ability to mentor emerging Pasifika scholars and a deep understanding of Indigenous and Pacific methodologies. Your leadership is reflected in your success securing research funding and driving initiatives that make a meaningful difference.

Key requirements:

  • A completed doctoral degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Proven teaching experience in areas such as Indigenous health Pacific Peoples health and global health with a sound understanding of the Aotearoa New Zealand health system.
  • A developing or established research profile with a track record of securing external funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage respectfully and effectively with Pacific communities applying culturally responsive research approaches.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills across academic community and policy sectors.
  • A clear commitment to equity inclusion and Indigenous/Pasifika methodologies.
  • Willingness to live and work in the Wellington region.
