Our department practices research on new technologies and we develop innovative electronic and mechanical prototypes as well as novel software methods for a wide range of application areas at Rosenxt including renewable energies offshore and underwater technology and sensors in industrial plants.
Ultrasound is a technology with a broad application within Rosenxt that can be used in various contexts e.g. for pipeline wall thickness measurements orientation of an inspection robots sensors to the object the detection of cracks; inherently it is also generally suitable for geometry measurements and much more. How good Ultrasound works is always depending on the materials involved and the geometry of the system it is being used a most simple configuration a transducer emits an ultrasound pulse and by using the time delay deltat between two echoes e.g. from the front wall and the back wall of an object the intended distances respectively the object thickness can be determined.
Our aim is to explore the use of specific sound patterns for the high resolution detection of geometric features and investigate the potential for applications with ultrasound.
The thesis work shall explore the feasibility of using acoustic metamaterials to shape the emission of sound beams and potentially to focus (potentially redirect) sound emissions on a to be inspected object and the capability to receive the sent signal back to build a higher resolution image from one measurement only.
Furthermore a peak review for the feasibility on other physical sensortypes is wished.
