This is aclosed promotional examination limited to employees in the classification of Firefighter or Firefighter/Paramedic with the City of Canton Ohio Fire Department.

To be eligible for the examination candidates must have completed at least five (5) years of service as a Firefighter or Firefighter/Paramedic with the City of Canton Ohio on or before Wednesday April 29 2026.

Job Description

General Statement of Duties:

Directs and supervises the activities of a fire company and the station activities of the other companies assigned to the same station; does related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

A Fire Captain is in command at the scene of a fire until a superior officer arrives. Is responsible for proper placement of equipment and assignment of personnel to stations. Leads in the performance of physical tasks involved in firefighting and has a high degree of responsibility for the protection of life and property. The work also involves responsibility for the maintenance of station equipment and the fire station with the Fire Captain charged with responsibility for planning and inspecting station and equipment maintenance functions. Duties require thorough knowledge of firefighting practices and ability to plan and direct the work of firefighters under hazardous conditions. Work is carried out according to general procedures outlined by superiors with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision is exercise over firefighters to whom specific assignments are made and whose work is checked in process and upon completion.

Examples of Work:

Plans and inspects equipment and station maintenance activities. Directs and supervises the activities of a fire company in its quarters its travels to and from a fire and its operation at the scene of a fire. Conducts company schools and drills on modern firefighting methods. Makes preplans of hotels schools apartments hospitals manufacturing establishments and other properties. Maintains records makes reports and requisitions supplies. Daily checks the condition of apparatus and appliances for correct working order. Gives or supervises emergency victim care of injured persons and oversees their removal to hospitals when necessary. Supervises the cleaning checking and replacement of tools and equipment following a fire. Oversees fire inspection and prevention activities of fire company. Oversees testing of fire hydrants for flow pressure condition accessibility and location. Keeps records and makes reports. Participates in individual and group advances training courses. Trains and issues instructions to firefighters in fire inspection and other prevention activities.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting equipment and methods; ability to plan and out work for subordinates and to maintain discipline; ability to recognize fire hazards; good knowledge of the geography of the City tact; physical strength and agility; good physical condition.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

Considerable experience as a firefighter and graduation from a standard high school with completion of one or more courses at a recognized fire training school highly desirable; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities. Five (5) years minimum as a State Certified Firefighter.

Testing Information

THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL TEST. IT IS ONLY OPEN TO FIREFIGHTERS OR FIREFIGHTERS/PARAMEDICES HAVING SERVED AT LEAST FIVE YEARS IN THE CANTON CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT.

This will be a two-part examination: a written exam which will be weighted at 40% and an assessment center which will be weighted at 60%. The top21 candidates from the written exam will advance to the assessment center provided a minimum passing score of 75% is achieved on the written exam. Credit will be given for seniorityafter the two examinations are weighted in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code and the Rules and Regulations of the Canton Civil Service Commission provided a passing score of 70% on the assessment center exam is attained.

The written examination will be held Wednesday April 29 2026 at 9:00am.Check in will begin 30 minutes prior to the exam. Applicants will be admitted to the test site only upon presentation of their valid State of Ohio Drivers License or other valid photo identification card to the examiners.The location of the examination will be determined at a later date. This exam will take approximately two and a half hours to complete.

The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association will be conducting the written exam and the questions for the exam will be taken from the following materials:

A. The New Company Officer Published 2018 Jason Hoevelmann

B. Fire Officers Handbook of Tactics 5th Edition John Norman

C. Brannigans Building Construction for the Fire Service 6th Edition F. Brannigan & G. Corbett

Resource Management Consultants (RMC) will conduct the assessment center portion of the examination to be held onSaturday May 16 2026. Eligible candidates will be notified of the date and time of their assessment exam. The assessment exam will be conducted in the Canton Civil Service Commission Office.

RATING
Your name will be placed on a list of eligibles upon receiving a passing grade and promotion shall be in accordance with Section 124.45 and 124.48 of the Ohio Revised Code.
