Chemist 2 (Range 16) salary: $2296.50

Chemist 3 (Range 18) salary: $2646.00


What you will be doing:

This air quality chemist position doesnt work with beakers and Bunsen burners but uses a wide variety analytical and physical chemistry knowledge widely marketable job skills and abilities in a fast paced and flexible work environment. Learn to perform an interesting and diverse mix of field based ambient air measurements and investigations to assess compliance with all applicable state and federal ambient air quality health standards. Whether you would like to perform the hands-on operation and troubleshooting of simple to complex air quality sensors and monitors or prefer the cerebral analysis review and reporting of collected data sets this job has something for you!

Clean air is essential to every breathing moment. The Air Monitoring & Quality Assurance Program in the Division of Air Quality operates and oversees air quality monitoring networks throughout Alaska. Our primary services include:

  • Operating ambient air quality monitoring networks to assess compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for carbon monoxide particulates nitrogen dioxide sulfur dioxide ozone and lead.

  • Conducting air quality monitoring in response to volcanic ashfall wildfires or special studies

  • Providing technical assistance in developing monitoring plans for air monitoring projects.

  • Implementing and following Quality Assurance and Quality Control protocols to ensure the effective operation of air quality monitors and the maintenance of high data quality standards.

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college in chemistry chemical or biomolecular engineering forensic chemistry biochemistry biophysical chemistry geochemistry environmental chemistry environmental engineering molecular biology or other physical or natural science.
AND
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

  • Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Chemistry: Knowledge of the concepts principles and theories of the composition structure and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations including uses of chemicals and their interactions danger signs production techniques and disposal methods.
  • Measurement and Instrumentation:Knowledge of electronics and related electrical engineering disciplines necessary for the research and development of sensors electronic measurement devices and instrumentation systems for aerospace systems and components.

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college in chemistry chemical or biomolecular engineering forensic chemistry biochemistry biophysical chemistry geochemistry environmental chemistry environmental engineering molecular biology or other physical or natural science.
AND
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical systematic sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on ones knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Chemistry: Knowledge of the concepts principles and theories of the composition structure and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations including uses of chemicals and their interactions danger signs production techniques and disposal methods.

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.
