Job Title:Grounds Maintenance Supervisor

Department:General Services

External Hiring Range:$54626.52-$67145.14

Compensation Grade:3003

Pay Range:$54626.52 - $84671.11

Purpose of the position:

The purpose of this position is to perform responsible supervisory duties in the maintenance and care of County grounds to ensure safe and attractive environments.

Minimum Education Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High School diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of experience in maintenance or building trades work including at least one (1) year supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Must possess a valid drivers license issued by the State of North Carolina that complies with federal state and local laws along with a safe driving record.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily very heavy work requiring exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally the following physical abilities are required: balancing climbing crawling crouching feeling fingering grasping handling hearing kneeling lifting mental acuity pulling pushing reaching repetitive motion speaking standing stooping talking visual acuity and walking. The work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to self or others.

Essential Functions of the position:

  • Supervise plan and coordinate the activities of the grounds department employees.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate the performance of staff and needs for County grounds parks towers and community centers.
  • Ensure staff have been properly trained on equipment proper PPE is being worn and maintained in working order.
  • Develop work schedules for staff in order to prepare for seasonal pool openings snow events and various County activities.
  • Perform outdoor maintenance including mowing trimming mulching planting tree removal excavation snow removal road repairs etc.
  • Service 911 mountaintop tower generators.
  • Supervise and provide lead worker duties for a crew on an assigned task as assigned.
  • Purchase material and supplies as necessary obtaining items from qualified vendors or seeking bids or price quotes according to established policy.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the procedures material and equipment needed to maintain County properties.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions for ground maintenance
  • Knowledge of related environmental laws centered around ground coverings equipment fuels and related disposal.
  • Skilled in the use of a variety of hand and power tools necessary in performing mechanical repairs low voltage wiring diagnostics and trouble analysis
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to supervise the work of semi-skilled and unskilled workers.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices and organizational personnel policies and procedures.
