Job Description

The Industrial Robotics Group (IRZ) at ETH Zrich and Inspire AG is a leading research unit tackling key challenges in robot-based manufacturing through innovation in computation modeling and system design. We employ advanced computational methods machine learning modeling and custom hardware and software to continually test our solutions in various real-world industry projects.

In one of our ongoing projects we are advancing robotic machining capabilities through the integration of secondary axes and improved force control. Your main task will be to design build and calibrate an end-effector that incorporates a milling spindle a feed axis and integrated force-torque sensing capabilities. A key objective is to redesign the final axis of the system to embed strain gauges that can accurately measure external forces during operation. Understanding and accounting for these external forces is critical to achieving high stiffness by control enhancing performance during milling and drilling tasks. The resulting setup will be integrated into an industrial robot and validated under real machining conditions pushing the boundaries of precision and responsiveness in robotic manufacturing.

We seek a dynamic and versatile intern with a mechanical engineering background and a hands-on attitude. The ideal candidate is keen to learn the intricacies of computational industrial robotics in a fast-paced research environment.

Tasks

  • System design in CAD of the complete assembly of components including three actuated axis and the force-torque measurement setup.
  • FEM-based develop of geometric features for strain gauges arrangement for external force/torque measurement.
  • Procurement assembly and system testing.
  • Design and implementation of a calibration method.

Requirements

  • A Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from ETH or EPFL.
  • Hands-on experience in CAD design and FEM.
  • Interest in hands-on work and practical problem-solving within a workshop environment
  • Mechanical Engineering experience demonstrated by a proven track record of successful (student) projects. Having taken part in a focus project at DMAVT-ETHZ is a huge plus.
  • Demonstrable organizational skills and the ability to make decisions independently.

Benefits

  • Deep exposure to robotics R&D across hardware software and systems.
  • Exposure to professional project management in a start-up atmosphere
  • One-on-one mentoring by seasoned professionals.
  • Highly motivated and driven colleagues.

Do you have a general understanding in all domains of robotics Are you someone who is exceptionally well-organized and detail-oriented If you are resilient and excel in tackling complex challenges in a fast-paced research environment we encourage you to have a look at IRZs webpage and apply for the position.
