Job Goal: The Band Instrument Specialist and High School Band Director position encompasses the preparation practice and performance of instrumental music from grades four to twelve. The instructor is tasked with inspiring exposing and guiding students to fully participate in active music making through instrumental music. The instructor is tasked with partnering with students faculty administration and community members in providing a vibrant and rigorous atmosphere where all students can be musically literate and expressive. The instructor will be a motivating force in his/her students lives and teach social and emotional elements through the instruction and performance of music.
Requirements:
- MA DESE Certification in Music Education K-12
- Bachelors or higher level degree in Music Education
Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills both oral and written
- Exemplary interpersonal communications skills that establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff parents and members of the community
- Thorough intermediate to advanced knowledge of band/percussion instruments and pedagogy associated with effective instruction
- Proficiency in multi-cultural music genres and traditional genres
- Commitment to changing lives through music education
- Kodaly pedagogical experience preferred
Responsibility:
- Planning implementation and assessment of instruction (aligned to Somervilles Learning Objectives and Curriculum) for band students in grades four through twelve.
- Recruitment and retention of students
- Procurement distribution and maintenance of instruments
- Publicity and promotion of public performances
- Student motivation conduct and discipline
- Maintaining alumni relationships
- Coordination of events and learning opportunities with partners including School of Honk the annual Honkfest and El Sistema Somerville
- Coordination communication and collaboration with music department colleagues
- Coordination with our Berklee Prepatory and City Programs
Instructs and plans High School Marching Band/ Concert Band program to include:
- Summer Mini-Band Camp (3 days)
- Rehearsals for annual Homecoming Field Show
- One yearly adjudication
- One yearly high school field trip (overnight with cultural experience and performance component)
- Minimum of 6 football game performances
- fParticipation in annual Memorial Day Parade
- Participation in annual Greek Parade
- Other civic duties to include: Mayoral Inauguration or other events
- Trips to elementary schools for performances and recruitment
- Annual Somerville Christmas Tree Lighting
- Performances at Class Day and High School Graduation
- Other performances to be determined by administration
- Ordering maintenance and storage of band uniforms
- Collaboration with All City Middle School program
- Creation of mentorship opportunities for High School Students
- Organizes and leads after-school practice sessions in preparation for field show
- Coordinates the marching program with: Percussion Instructor Assistant Band Directors Color Guard and other faculty members
- Maintenance of Band Music Library
- Maintains a clean and orderly band room and storage room
- Complies with and supports all District regulations and policies
- Develops a Band-Parent booster organization
- Contributes to building newsletters
- Communicates quarterly with band parents via a newsletter
- Sets up and maintains a professional website
- Additional duties as assigned by the Principal/Supervisor and in accordance with the SEU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
