Job Title: Dean College of Arts and Humanities
Division: College of Arts & Humanities


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities must successfully engage and work well with faculty staff students fellow administrators and community members in building a vision for the college that emphasizes academic excellence. The Dean is the senior academic and administrative person of the College and is responsible for its operational and financial success. The Dean should possess a record of academic administrative and teaching excellence multi-disciplinary collaboration and inclusive decision-making. The ideal person for this job is expected to offer the collaborative leadership needed to enhance the student-centered education that the University is committed to provide.

As the Academic and Administrative officer for the College of Arts and Humanities the Dean reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and will be responsible for the strategic programmatic and financial operations of the College. The Dean leads and executes strategic planning in alignment with the Universitys Strategic Plan and ever-changing student demographics. The Dean is expected to provide academic guidance in program and curriculum development teaching research/scholarship and the vital development of external support and fundraising. The Dean will work collaboratively with department chairs and school directors to promote shared governance as well as to supervise an administrative team. All academic and administrative decisions and recommendations pertaining to the college will be the prerogative of the Dean subject to review by the Provost.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • The Dean plays a significant role in the future of the college in terms of growth academic success and community impact. The following are several of the functions for the next Dean:
  • Coordinate activities with various stakeholders to accomplish the mission vision and values of the college.
  • Effective supervisory practices skills and techniques employee-employer relationships and the management of a unit.
  • Knowledge and understanding of University and system-wide infrastructure policies and procedures.
  • Planning managing and directing committees and program related activities.
  • Organizational development and administrative personnel and fiscal planning.
  • Prepare recommend and administer the college budget.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Maintain liaison between area high schools and four-year college counterparts and leads in the establishment of transfer agreements.
  • Work effectively on program and policy development with faculty and administrators.
  • Perform other duties utilizing similar skills and abilities related to the accomplishment of the essential functions as assigned by the administration.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Leading candidates for Dean of the COAH must hold:
  • An earned doctorate (or equivalent) or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution.
  • A solid record of teaching service and academic/scholarly accomplishments deserving appointment to the rank of full professor in an academic discipline within the college.
  • Three to five years successful record of academic administrative leadership and experience at the department level or above.
  • Experience in program evaluation and review and student advisement recruitment and retention.
  • Experience in accreditation.
  • Experience in managing complex budgets.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • The successful candidate should be an energetic and strategic leader who will also demonstrate:
  • Ability to promote high-quality teaching scholarship service and professional activities.
  • Ability to motivate personnel within the school to be committed to students success.
  • Ability to motivate the diverse workforce within the college.
  • Ability to articulate and communicate a vision for performing arts and communication education religion liberal arts and the humanities.
  • Ability to perform efficient fiscal management.
  • Ability to understand and use data to enhance and encourage efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Active in national and international academic and/or professional organizations.
  • A demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to multi-cultural needs issues and opportunities.
  • A high degree of initiative integrity and openness.
  • A record of successful management of large and complex academic units.
  • Collaborate with Advancement and other personnel in fundraising efforts to strategically develop resources for the college.
  • Excellent time management planning and organizational skills and strategies in the context of the demanding and time-intensive position.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to national accreditation boards (e.g. SACSCOC).
  • Possess a strong commitment to supporting the diverse needs of each department and program in performing arts and communication liberal arts education religion and the humanities.
  • Possess interpersonal supervision and leadership skills with the ability to be creative make informed decisions and inspire staff.
  • Proven excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
