Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated Coastal Community Engagement Assistant to support our work in advancing coastal research community engagement and sustainable resilience initiatives. This position plays a key role in ensuring smooth program operations by providing documentation support marketing and coordinating events and meetings assisting with reporting and financial management and contributing to coastal research efforts.
Who We Are
The Virginia Tech Coastal Collaborator brings the best of Virginia Techs capacity to the coast focusing on mitigating climate issues with a myriad of projects. The VTCC is home to a collaborative environment engaging with VT faculty community stakeholders and academic research partners. As a land grant extension program the VTCC works alongside the Virginia Cooperative Extension to execute its coastal resilience initiatives and programs throughout Virginia.
Required Qualifications
Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently with the ability to manage multiple priorities at once.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to conduct research synthesize findings and prepare clear summaries.
Strong interpersonal skills comfort engaging with public stakeholders and facilitating meetings with diverse stakeholders.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Workspace; familiarity with website and social media management and Canva software.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors degree in marketing communications English environmental studies coastal/marine science or a related field; or equivalent relevant experience.
Experience with financial tracking grant management budgeting or administrative support preferred.
Familiarity with coastal science marine ecosystems or climate adaptation frameworks (i.e. Resilience Adaptation Feasibility Tool); and/or an enthusiasm to learn about climate issues in coastal Virginia.
Experience engaging with community organizations government agencies or nonprofit partners; familiarity with Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE).
Self-motivation and ability to work independently specifically on strict deadlines.
Skills in data visualization and GIS - proficiency with ArcPro and ArcGIS online.

1. Physical Demands:
a. Travel Requirements: The role involves occasional travel to meet attend meetings and attend workshops
b. Field Work: Occasional participation in fieldwork activities such as site visits or environmental assessments which can require walking over uneven terrain carrying equipment or working in various weather conditions.
c. Office Work: Standard office tasks include sitting at a desk for extended periods using a computer and attending virtual meetings.
2. Environmental Hazards:
a. Weather Conditions: Fieldwork may expose the employee to varying weather conditions including rain wind and extreme temperatures depending on the location and time of year.
3. Conditional Terms:
a. Job Duration: This role is a 1500 hour wage position located in Hampton Virginia. It does not include benefits.
b. Conviction/Driving Checks: Conviction checks are required for all non-student hires to ensure suitability for the role.
c. Health and Safety: The employee should adhere to health and safety protocols especially when traveling or engaging in fieldwork to ensure personal safety and the safety of community members
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
