Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of the School of Business Career Development Office (BCDO) the Career Consultant advises students on career exploration professional development and the techniques for obtaining partnership with other colleagues the Career Consultant develops plans and administers career-related programs and activities designed to assist undergraduate School of Business students from a diversity of backgrounds and identities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the unique needs of diverse populations and a commitment to equitably addressing these needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts one-on-one career advising sessions with a diverse undergraduate student population including domestic international and underrepresented groups focusing on career development job search strategies and career exploration through in-person phone and virtual platforms.
  • Assists in delivering career development programs and information in a classroom setting and on an individual basis to undergraduate students graduates and alumni.
  • Assists in developing an understanding of the School of Business majors and career development for those majors including resumes LinkedIn profiles cover letters and other job search communications.
  • Conducts practice interviews/case interviews discusses negotiation strategies and equips students with valuable networking strategies.
  • Researches the current job market and hiring trends interprets findings and uses this knowledge to offer insight and guidance to support students career management goals and job search.
  • Coordinates and supports external employer recruiting relationships; may meet with employers to understand employer hiring and recruitment efforts as well as understand the job market and provide timely information on the market and its trends to students to support student job searches.
  • Collaborate with the BCDO staff the School of Business and other University of Connecticut departments as necessary.
  • Assists with the planning development and evaluation of BCDO programs meetings and workshops; assists with the coordination of events and programming.
  • May be responsible for the recruitment interviewing hiring and training of Career Interns. Mentor and meet with interns weekly to provide assignments and to discuss review and evaluate progress of assignments. Address areas that require improvement and ensure departmental needs are met. Manage and resolve day-to-day administrative problems related specifically to Career Interns; maintain necessary paperwork and records including payroll.
  • May provide job/career-related assistance and deliver undergraduate career development programs on the UConn Hartford campus to School of Business students.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in business counseling or related field and a minimum of three years of related experience OR masters degree in business counseling or related field and a minimum of two years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated business writing and editing skills as evidenced by applicant materials including resume and cover letter.
  • Experience providing effective presentations in a variety of settings (one-on-one small group large group).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products in particular Word Excel and PowerPoint.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree in business counseling or related field.
  • Minimum of four years of related professional experience in corporate recruitment professional hiring human resources or career coaching in either a corporate or higher education environment.
  • Proven experience working with international students and other diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships both within the university and with corporate executives in relation to college recruiting.
  • Experience as a career coach or counselor.
  • Experience serving in a supervisory or lead capacity.
