What youll be doing.

As a member of the NSCCs Environmental and Agricultural Technology Research Lab of the Annapolis Valley campus in Middleton the Student Research Assistant will be responsible for helping Research Associates conduct plant and soil research. This position will involve specifically developing a plant health monitoring system using multispectral sensor technology. The student will determine what multispectral and thermal sensor would be best to monitor plant health in an up close and controlled environment as well as develop protocols for assessing plant health during the plants exposure to various stressors. The position will be all laboratory work and offers hands-on experience in plant science remote sensing and environmental data collection.

To be eligible for this student research assistant position:

You must be a current part time or full time NSCC student.

What youll need

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Working on completing a college diploma

Minimum experience:

  • Strong interest in remote sensing horticulture plant ecology crop science and soil science.
  • Familiarity with compiling and organizing diverse datasets from various sources including experimental data.
  • Ability to conduct lab and field research with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to assist in the use of multispectral sensors for monitoring plant health over time and contribute to data collection and analysis.
  • Experience with remote sensing tools or plant imaging.
  • Basic understanding of GIS or data visualization tools.

Minimum skills and ability:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Exceptional client service skills and a proven team player
  • Ability to work as a team member in a deadline-oriented work environment
  • Demonstrated analytical skills problem solving techniques and the ability to look beyond symptoms to gather facts and information
  • Expertise in software including Microsoft office suite of products (Excel Word etc)
