Description

The Associate Director for Training Outreach and Psychological Assessment (Associate Director) provides oversight to a multidisciplinary clinical team tasked with training outreach and psychological assessments. The team oversees the clinical training programs for graduate student trainees (i.e. practicum students) doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows including data collection and evaluation of training services and training program development in accordance with guidelines and accreditation requirements of the American Psychological Association (APA). The team also oversees the outreach and programmatic efforts of the UCC to support campus and individual mental health wellness and skill development as well as UCC psychological assessments in collaboration with and on behalf of the medication management team Student Health Center and Student Access. The Associate Director works closely with Student Care Coordination Student Health Center Student access Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the UCCs Continuity Psychiatry Programs and Administration.

Reporting directly to the UCC Director the Associate Director supervises a leadership team made up of four program managers to provide leadership assign cases in a timely and appropriate manner oversee quality improvement activities such as chart review and documentation processes and ensures compliance with individual service plans. In partnership with the Director as well as the Associate Directors for Continuity Psychiatry and Programs this position coordinates intake teams and referral services within the clinic and works to build a highly effective team within a collaborative and interdependent clinic.

The Associate Director functions as a staff psychologist approximately 30% of the time offering diagnostic assessment short- term therapy in individual and group settings for Vanderbilt students and assists Urgent Care as needed. This position will also perform community outreach consultation and liaison activities and will serve as a senior clinical supervisor for unlicensed and newly licensed staff as well as graduate trainees. Multicultural awareness and responsiveness are important components of all training clinical and community outreach-oriented work.

About the Student Care Network:

The Student Care Network (SCN) is comprised of the Center for Student Wellbeing Student Care Coordination the University Counseling Center and the Student Health Center. The SCN is a holistic network of services and resources pertaining to health and wellness available to all Vanderbilt University students who have paid the Student Health Fee. As such staff within the offices comprising the SCN work collaboratively to create integrated processes referrals and treatment plans to better serve the entire student.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

Primary leadership in the management of the Training Outreach and Psychological Assessment team

(Programs)

  • Supervises a leadership team made up of four program managers provides day-to-day operational oversight assigns cases in a timely and appropriate manner reviews terminations and referrals from team approves extensions for separated students via bridge appointments oversees quality improvement activities such as chart review and documentation processes identifies resource needs advocates for staff supports strategic innovation and ensures compliance with individual service plans as well as UCC protocols.

  • Provide supervision and leadership training programs for graduate students in psychology including intermediate and advanced psychology practica predoctoral interns in psychology and postdoctoral fellows in psychology including the identification assignment documentation and compensation of trainee supervisors across all UCC areas to ensure adequate coverage and compliance with University policies related to employment.

  • Assists with selection of trainees trainee evaluation supervisor selection and duties development and implementation of training policies and procedures training data analysis and preparation of related reports for program evaluation to support the operation of training programs.

  • Ensures compliance with APA requirements and related professional standards and to maintain APA accreditation for the doctoral internship program

  • Ensure compliance with APPIC and related professional standards and to maintain APPIC membership for the postdoctoral fellowship program

  • Represent and advocate for the training program and UCC to professional organizations such as APA ACCTA and APPIC as well as to local and regional organizations including local academic graduate programs in clinical and counseling psychology and clinical social work.

  • Provide leadership administration strategy and direction to the outreach and programmatic efforts of the UCC to support campus and individual mental health wellness and skill development. Review assessment and learning outcome data from outreach efforts as well as data from Healthy

Minds and other surveys to identify trends and needs of the student population. Work with the Director and associate directors to ensure compliance with outreach requirements of individual service plans of all clinicians within the UCC.

  • Provide leadership administration strategy and direction to the UCC assessment unit and support their work in collaboration with and on behalf of the medication management team Student Health Center and Student Access. Monitor waitlist times and identify methods for reduction in time from referral to completion.

Provides leadership to the University Counseling Center under the direction of the Director and in collaboration with Associate Directors

  • Under the direction of the UCC Director collaborates with Associate Directors for Care Continuity Psychiatry and Administration to engage in quality improvement and strategic planning for the Center as a whole which includes but is not limited to developing effective protocols and practices training staff on both UCC and University workplace expectations reviewing and revising intakes and referrals both internally and externally management of conflicts of interests ensuring appropriate coverage of leadership in-person when the UCC is staffed developing agendas for staff and leadership meetings and taking responsibility for the effective functioning of the UCC.

  • In coordination with Associate Directors of Care Continuity Psychiatry and Administration develop update and implement the UCC Clinical Guidelines & Procedures to ensure consistency in the delivery of clinical services as well as in the performance of administrative tasks.

  • Collaborates with fellow UCC Associate Directors for Care Continuity and Psychiatry to coordinate intakes and referrals ensuring that cases are assigned to clinicians in timely and appropriate manner.

  • Collaborates with Associate Directors of Care Continuity and Psychiatry to oversee consistency in chart review and documentation processes.

  • Meets for consultation and strategize care for those students who have excessive no-shows to ensure compliance and increase utilization of clinical hours.

  • In conjunction with Center Director leads efforts in the recruitment of clinical and professional staff to ensure the Programs team as well as Center attracts and retains talents who greatly contribute to the Centers mission.

  • Assist the Director in preparation of Program team reports including annual report budget preparation and special reports to administrators at Vanderbilt University as needed.

  • Ensure that all clinical staff receive appropriate orientation and training specific to UCC policies and procedures to increase adaptation to the Centers culture and to enhance the delivery of clinical services to students.

  • Collaborate with other UCC administrators for outreach developmental programming and clinical services to negotiate parallel activities and to provide balance between outreach activities and clinical resource needs.

Provide professional short-term mental health services to students:

  • Provide an integrated assessment of students presenting for counseling to include the influence of bio-psycho-social variables on treatment and to effectively guide subsequent treatment planning.

  • Develop appropriate treatment plans to target the needs of the student within a short-term multidisciplinary and multimodal system of care and collaborate effectively with other treatment resources for the benefit of students.

  • Maintain the expectations of Individual Service Plan which includes a 30% caseload of direct service groups and outreach (no less than 1% and no more than 2% of total) throughout the academic year.

  • Participate in development of effective and innovative intervention and skill development programs for students based on knowledge and awareness of emergent campus mental health trends and needs.

  • Develop effective working relationships with the Vanderbilt community including Student Care

Network entities academic deans faculty residential staff Dean of Students departments Vanderbilt University Police Department and other relevant campus partners to ensure a collaborative support network on campus to respond to student needs and optimize support and safety for Vanderbilt students.

  • Provide outreach and educational programming to campus community to support campus and individual mental health wellness and skill development.

  • Maintain appropriate and timely documentation for recordkeeping and communication with other service providers based on ethical and legal standards and requirements to enhance care for students.

  • Assists UCC Urgent Care as needed related to involuntary hospitalizations supporting after-hours counselors on call and similar functions in support of the safety of students.

Provide clinical supervision for staff and trainees:

  • Provide clinical and administrative supervision to post-doc doctoral trainees and practicum trainees as necessary

  • Provide clinical supervision for unlicensed and newly licensed staff as well as graduate trainees in social work and/or counseling to support requirements for licensure and enhance knowledge and skills.

  • Participate in training activities including case conference small group supervision and seminars/workshops to support trainee development and progress within the UCCs accredited training program.

  • Co-facilitate therapy and skill-based groups/works with trainees to provide effective treatment and coping skill development for students as well as learning and role modeling for trainee cofacilitators.

Perform other administrative functions:

  • Serve on divisional committees and working groups to enrich the experience and resources available to staff across the division.

  • Participate in division-wide events (Move-In Day Rites of Spring Diverse Dores Day MLK Day etc.) as needed to support colleagues and ensure these events run smoothly.

  • Learn and comply with financial policies and procedures related to travel procurement and expense reporting in order to be a good steward of university funds.

  • Engage in professional development including presentations at pertinent conferences and workshops to expand upon and bring back skills and knowledge to the greater UCC team.

  • Perform other duties necessary to enhance the student experience and/or facilitate the success of the University division or department.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position has administrative and clinical supervisory responsibility for four program managers for training outreach and psychological assessment with 2 additional psychologists or counselors including unlicensed and newly licensed mental health clinicians as well as trainees indirectly reporting up to them.On occasion may need to provide clinical supervision to unlicensed psychologists on the Care team. This position reports administratively and functionally to the UCC Director.

Education and Certifications:

  • A Doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Psychology counseling social work or other mental health-related field is necessary.

  • Completion of APA accredited internship is necessary.

  • Licensure as a Psychologist with HSP designation in Tennessee or current licensure in another state with the ability to obtain licensure in Tennessee within one year of employment is required.

Experience and Skills:

  • 4 years of post-licensure clinical experience with experience of providing clinical supervision is required.

    • 8 years of post-licensure clinical experience is strongly preferred.

  • Completion of practicum and internship in discipline required.

    • Training and experience working with students/clients with complex or acute diagnoses such as trauma psychosis persistent suicidal ideation eating disorders alcohol and other drug dependency and similar concerns is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with patients/ clients from diverse backgrounds is required.

  • Effective interpersonal skills to form and maintain meaningful relationships with students colleagues and all stakeholders required.

  • Growth mindset and willingness to learn is necessary.

  • Ability to work effectively within a team framework is necessary.

  • Experience with young adult population is strongly preferred.

  • 4 years working with high acuity patients is preferred.

  • Experience in crisis and care evaluation and intervention is preferred.

  • Experience working in a higher education setting is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to both provide appropriate care to students with complex diagnoses and/or significant psychiatric histories and appropriately terminate or refer those students when appropriate with minimal oversight or supervision is preferred.

  • Specific knowledge experience and skills in providing services to a diverse student population including APIDA international Latinx African-American LGBTQI military first-generation low-income and/or rural is preferred.

  • Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication including public speaking and group meeting facilitation is preferred.

  • Ability to function in an acute care model for assessment and management of clinical emergencies is preferred.
