Position Summary
A SIGN -ON BONUS OF $5639 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE : $2819.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2819.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE . Provide daily hands-on field leadership for a team of HVAC and maintenance mechanics including coaching assisting and ensuring that field staff have the knowledge skills abilities parts tools equipment and other resources necessary to perform their jobs safely and efficiently. Assist the supervisor as needed and serve as a backup when the supervisor is out. Work includes preventive/predictive maintenance reactive maintenance projects and construction support. Serves as a mentor while assisting less experienced staff embraces new technology and change and seeks innovative ways to improve efficiency while meeting energy environment safety and end user needs. Contributes to the UNC safety culture and always considers safety first. Proper operation and maintenance of building HVAC and refrigeration systems including complex refrigeration equipment supporting an extensive biotechnology/life sciences research and health care campus. Systems supported include DX units variable refrigerant flow systems gas heaters environmental chambers walk-in coolers and freezers air dryers ice machines packaged units CRAC units dehumidification systems refrigerated scientific equipment ultra-low and cryogenic equipment small chillers and specialized equipment.
Required Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Must be skilled at and capable of technically directing and coaching others in the operation and maintenance of large and complex mechanical and associated electrical systems for a regulated biotechnology/life sciences research and healthcare campus. Tasks include troubleshooting and repairing complex environmental chambers and systems variable refrigerant flow equipment boilers chillers large DX systems mission critical cooling equipment and general industrial HVAC equipment. Ability to diagnose complex system-wide issues affecting critical research health care teaching and public service operations. Excellent communication skills are required to coordinate shop activities with customers including building coordinators project managers researchers and trade staff. Ability to use a Windows PC and other devices such as tablets and smartphones for UNCs computerized maintenance management system (AiM) and other software. Excellent organizational skills are required for ordering and tracking materials. Must be skilled in reading and interpreting electrical/mechanical engineering drawings. May be required to work in active high containment labs which requires a baseline blood draw a physical and vaccines (currently flu tetanus and Covid 19) as well as annual medical certification respirator fit testing and specific training. Entry into such labs requires escort from Environment Health & Safety department respirator use safety attire and possibly shower in/out. May be required to work in healthcare facilities with requirements including vaccines (currently varicella or chickenpox flu and Covid 19) tuberculosis testing and overall medical certification. Ability to periodically serve on-call duty including nights weekends and holidays. While on call has responsibility for emergency response for all Auxiliary and Refrigeration shop equipment. A valid NC Drivers License or ability to obtain one prior to the start date. EPA universal refrigerant certification or ability to obtain within one year of start date. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close. Preferred Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Progressive experience in troubleshooting and repair of large DX and refrigeration equipment. Experience with variable refrigerant flow systems DX zone systems and controllers PLC controls dehumidification systems boilers refrigerators ice machines and large capacity air dryers. Knowledge of electrical plumbing and equipment installation. Licensure as a refrigeration contractor heating contractor certifications in ultra-low temp refrigeration equipment. Experience with managing work orders in a computerized maintenance management system.
