Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking equity-minded individuals for a classified employee role as aMaintenance Specialist IIunder the Administrative Services Wing as part of the Maintenance and Operations department.

THE DEPARTMENT:
The Maintenance Specialist II Electrician will be responsible for installing maintaining troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems and equipment across the campus in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety regulations. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the colleges electrical infrastructure.

Our Maintenance department ensures that all trades are responsive to campus community needs and coordinates all trades on special projects. Our Maintenance and Operations team has many years of experience in different trades and possesses expertise in maintenance and repair. Services from our department include:

Summary
Provides a variety of skilled construction alteration maintenance and repair of facilities and buildings. Provides journey-level maintenance services to ensure facilities are maintained in safe and proper operating conditions. Supports related work by contributing to the work of other skilled staff in their specialty.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Maintenance Specialist II is a multi-skilled maintenance specialist requiring journey-level training experience skills and generalist competency in additional related trade areas to participate with and/or assist other trades in projects and assignments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties as assigned:
  • Performs a variety of skilled work activities in the maintenance and repair of buildings facilities and equipment in one or more of the maintenance trades such as glazing welding roofing flooring masonry locksmith skills plumbing carpentry electrical sheet metal and painting.
  • Evaluate and respond to work orders and maintenance needs and perform related projects in the skilled maintenance trades; inspect facilities and equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance activities; inspects and responds to emergency maintenance and repair issues and needs; troubleshoots and repairs equipment and systems as needed.
  • Plans organizes and lays out assigned tasks. Interprets plans diagrams blueprints technical manuals and specifications. Estimates time material and equipment needs to complete projects in a safe and timely manner.
  • Identifies reports and assists with resolving safety sanitary and fire hazards. Refers major maintenance and repair needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Performs routine carpentry and limited construction work; assists in the remodel and building on existing structures as required.
  • Installs floor and ceiling tiles sets forms and finished cement; installs a variety of lock systems throughout college and/or District sites.
  • Accesses and retrieves work orders using the college and/or District system. May enter time and materials information associated with the work performed on in-progress or completed work orders.
  • Services heating and air conditioning equipment; operates monitors and adjusts energy management system on a regular cycle and as needed; makes minor adjustments and repairs to hot water systems and heaters.
  • Performs a variety of preventive maintenance functions including but not limited to inspection and repair of walls floors doors ceilings seals and roofing leaks. Responds to urgent repair needs quickly and calmly by assessing the situation making an appropriate diagnosis and sequencing materials and repairs.
  • Repairs items such as but not limited to fences outdoor play equipment and bicycle racks using hand and power tools welding tanks and arc welders.
  • Prepares a variety of surfaces for painting; applies paint varnish shellac enamel lacquer or other protective decorative finishes and various surfaces.
  • Prepares reports on work completed and materials used. Ensures that secondary containers for cleaning and other products are properly labeled and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for assigned area(s) are up to date.
  • Recommends standards and specifications for equipment materials and workmanship for work performed by staff and outside contractors.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and specialist in-service training sessions including but not limited to requirements of OSHA and the EPA.
  • May participate in the setting up and breaking down of event venues for college and/or District activities as directed.
  • May train and guide the work of other maintenance specialists.
  • Supports the Facilities office by providing coverage in other areas such as grounds and custodial departments.
  • Rearranges moves and sets furniture and equipment in place according to established instructions and seating arrangements. May assist others in assembling furniture removing from and properly disposing of packaging materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 Code of Professional Ethics.

  • Other abilities include the use of hand and power tools to perform construction carpentry electrical plumbing and mechanical services.
  • Requires the ability to read and interpret drawings sketches blueprints schematics and building and fire codes.
  • Requires the ability to maintain records and activity logs.
  • Requires the ability to estimate materials and labor for assignments.
  • Requires the ability to observe safe work practices and handle hazardous materials according to accepted procedures.
  • Requires the ability to complete projects on a timely basis and support special events.
  • Requires the ability to complete training within a reasonable time in handling storage and disposal of hazardous materials asbestos awareness OSHA standards and blood borne pathogens.
  • Requires the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.

Education and Experience
  • The position typically requires a High School diploma or equivalent plus specialized training and four years of tested generalist experience in trades such as carpentry plumbing masonry locksmith or mechanical.
  • Or any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Licenses and Certificates
  • Requires a valid drivers license.
  • Familiarity/certification/training in operating heavy equipment including forklifts ispreferred.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Install maintain and repair electrical systems including wiring circuit breakers lighting and power distribution systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable electrical codes safety regulations and college policies.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of electrical projects including upgrades and new installations.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions where significant safety considerations exist from full-body physical labor and handling of medium-to-heavy-weight materials.

Conditions of Employment

(ON-CAMPUS - in-person position) This is a permanent general-funded full-time (40 hours per week) 12-month-per-year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pmwith the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends if necessary to meet the departments needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.The District provides medical dental and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. Pay Philosophy:
