Job Description

Position Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Avionics Engineering Subject-Matter Expert (SME) to act as the primary technical authority for the integration of advanced avionics systems on both military fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. This expert will lead system architecture certification digital engineering and integration initiatives for high-priority defense programs.

The SME will provide technical direction throughout the design integration and evaluation of avionics hardware and software solutions ensuring flawless interoperability across multiple platforms. This role demands strong leadership mentoring abilities and collaboration with senior military and industry partners.

Tasks

Key Responsibilities

System Architecture & Design

  • Establish integration strategies for VPX-based avionics hardware across MIL-STD-1553 ARINC-429/664 and Ethernet TSN/AFDX networks.
  • Produce interface control documents data-flow diagrams and timing models.
  • Guarantee compliance with open standards such as OMS/UCI FACE and SOSA.

Certification & Airworthiness

  • Direct preparation of certification and safety documentation including hazard analyses and flight-clearance materials.
  • Ensure adherence to DO-254 (hardware) and DO-178C (software) guidelines.

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)

  • Represent avionics designs in SysML using tools like CAMEO or MagicDraw.
  • Oversee requirements management version control and verification alignment.

Integration & Validation

  • Supervise lab-to-aircraft integration covering wiring EMI/EMC protocol checks and timing.
  • Prepare for flight testing including drafting test procedures and analyzing real-time telemetry.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to program leaders and external partners.
  • Provide mentorship to mid-career engineers instilling best practices in open architecture and secure

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen with an active TS/SCI clearance.
  • At least 20 years of hands-on experience in avionics design and system integration for military aircraft.
  • Mastery of MIL-STD-1553 ARINC-429/664 Ethernet TSN/AFDX and VPX frameworks.
  • Demonstrated success integrating secure communications SATCOM and RF systems.
  • Direct involvement with airworthiness documentation and flight test execution.
  • Skilled with avionics E-CAD and MBSE platforms (CAMEO/MagicDraw Rhapsody Altium OrCAD).

Preferred Expertise

  • Background in advanced networks and C4ISR solutions.
  • Working knowledge of DO-254 DO-178C MIL-STD-461 and RCC standards.
  • Certifications such as INCOSE CSEP/ESEP DER or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with software-defined radios content routing and SDN-based integration.
  • Agile/SAFe certifications and experience with DevSecOps tools (e.g. Platform One Rancher).
