City of Greeley: Work Live and Play in Greeley: Summary:
The Criminalist works with law enforcement officials to uncover facts and evidence in criminal cases. Responsibilities include conducting interviews reviewing evidence and analyzing data. The successful candidate must know how to prepare reports and present cases to prosecutors. The Criminalist must also be able to communicate effectively with other agencies and personnel.
The Criminalist is vital to the success of the Greeley Police Department and provides specialized investigative support which allows GPD to spend more time providing proactive policing services to the public. This position is a non-sworn equivalent to a Detective in the Investigations Unit. The Criminalist will work on a specific team with a primary focus on that teams mission (Internet Crimes Against Children - ICAC Crimes Against Persons Fraud/Cyber Crime Gang Crime or Property Crimes).This position will initially be assigned to the ICAC investigations section and will conduct investigations of internet-facilitated crimes against children.
Experience Knowledge Skills:
Minimum Requirements
- Two (2) - Four (4) years experience in law enforcement investigations or intelligence operations
- Two (2) - Four (4) years experiencehandling and maintaining chain of custody and integrity of the evidence
- Valid drivers license with good driving history
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Preferred
Bilingual in Spanish and English highly desired.
Associate degree in criminal justice or a related field or POST Certified; Bachelors degree preferred
Prior investigative experience in persons crimes
Experience investigating Internet-facilitated crimes against children
Experience in the execution of search warrants
Experience with forensic examination of digital media
Experience with victim and suspect interviews
Experience with evidence preservation
Experience in providing testimony in court
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of laws judicial procedures regulations rules and guidelines related to crime and evidence.

- Ability to conduct interviews collect evidence and prepare reports
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Essential Functions:
Prepares coordinates and executes search warrants for content and physical locations
- Investigates complex criminal activities or local federal or state law violations
- Gathers and verifies evidence through interviews and observation of suspects and witnesses or by reviewing and analyzing records and logs
- Analyzes and interprets data documents and records to uncover evidence
- Examines items of evidence to discover preserveidentity and collect evidence
- Identifies scope timing and direction of investigations and justify changes in that criteria based on findings
- Compiles and reports detailed investigative findings
- Completes search and arrest warrantaffidavits
- Provides court testimony regarding observations and determinations of criminal activity
- Compiles complete and accurate written reports of findings
- Communicates with law enforcement personnel of confidential information regarding on-going criminal investigations
- Communicates with attorneys and other judiciary personnel of confidential information regarding on-going criminal investigations and court proceedings
- Adequately prepares for effective presentation of findings in a court setting
- Keeps up to date on changes in laws and procedures
- Maintains contact with other law enforcement agencies and personnel
- Stays abreast of new technologies used in investigations
- Prioritizes own casework
- Thinks critically and independently

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Work is primarily performed indoors and with minimal exposure to the elements
- Work is performed at a fixed workstation
- Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens
- Possible exposure to electrical shock while dealing with computer-based evidence
- Assisting with the execution of search warrants at locations away from the station
- Ability to lift light to moderate weighing evidence packages from one location to another
- Communication skills enough to hear and convey information to/from the public via phone and in person
- Operate standard office equipment requiring repetitive hand/arm movements
- Vision enough to interpret computer screens and documents to assist the public and computer work assignments
- Manual dexterity enough to accurately input retrieve and verify work assignments
- Extensive work performed on a computer with repetitive data entry and retrieval

Some travel may be required for the role.
