The Call Center employs representatives trained to address citizens tax related inquiries ranging in diversity from sales and marijuana excise tax to wage withholding and income tax. The Typical Day of aTax Examiner I:
Our customer focused representatives become highly skilled trained professionals after receiving up to four months of onsite comprehensive orientation and training. These employees learn many key aspects of the role of serving asTax Examiners. For example instructing taxpayers on completion of applicable forms and documents; making determinations of appropriate tax collection procedures and making authorizations or denials of refunds or assessments. Moreover the Tax Examiner provides the public with information regarding tax statutes department policies procedures and positions on taxes administered by the department by telephone web messages and issuance of letters.

As a Call Center team member you will:
Educate inbound callers over the phone on specific and ambiguous tax issues administered by the Department of Revenue when the callers are uncertain about Colorado statutes policies and procedures.
Analyze and understand complex issues affecting their tax accounts in a fast-paced environment while also communicating the situation clearly and effectively in a way that the caller can understand.
Assist callers with exceptional customer service in utilizing the Department of Revenue or related entitys websites tax software or service portals to file returns submit payments access tax information and many other activities.
Learn and adapt to changes in statutes policies and procedures on a frequent basis while being able to also facilitate the resolution of taxpayer account issues in accordance with the state statutes and policies.
These positions are in training for approximately 3 to 4 months. Examiners are required to report to the Lakewood office at 1881 Pierce Street Lakewood CO 80214 for the duration of the training. Once the training has been successfully completed unless there are circumstances that prevent it the examiner is expected to move to the work from home environment with occasional requirement to travel to the Lakewood office. Candidates who live 75 miles or more from the Lakewood location should discuss the travel requirements with the supervisor at the time of interview.

Class Code & Classification Description:
Tax Examiner I -H8N1XXMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
Two (2) years of experience in customer service (six months of this experience must include work in accounting bookkeeping auditing or tax administration).
Additional appropriate education in Accounting Business Finance will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
State experience working with GenTax
Experience working with state county or municipal taxes
Experience in bookkeeping technical accounting tax administration business economics finance.
Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
Previous call center experience
Conditions of Employment with theCDOR:
Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty integrity and public confidence.
As a condition of employment with the CDOR all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy. Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations.
To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:
Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position
Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
